What is your opinion with gaming on IPS, TN or VA panels?
I had a Dell 2719 TN panel for 2 years loved it!

I my gaming area, monitor is under an overhang and it is only about 140 lux, not dark but not bright, I wonder if my TN was good because of that

I want an IPS but worry due to me not being very bright were I play

Viewing angles are no concern to me

I think its not this easy at least for me. I play for some years on asus PG278Q TN panel. In my option it looks very good. On PG279Q release i bought this IPS panel but it looks so much worse compare to my TN. After 2 weeks of testing and hope i could get used to this monitor but i had to send it back and keep my TN.
In 3 days i get my new LG 34GP950G-B which is my next try on IPS or now nano IPS whatever. I realy hope its better then my last experiance.

I had the Dell s2719 TN Panel for a year or so and damn, loved that thing. Seemed very accurate and looked great for the colors and darks I set it for

IPS is generally better but not always, there are bad IPS panels and there are good TN panels

There's more to monitors than just color

I cannot describe my preferences really, I do not like eye popping colors, I like a smooth look with nice blacks

If someone told you they had wanted the best 27" VA panel for under $400 what would you tell them?

Personally, I'm completely against VA panels because they have intrinsically higher response times. Not the advertised numerical BS like 1ms, I mean actual response times.

The average actual response times (as in when the panel displays an actual moving image and not just a still single color) for VA are between 8 and 10 milliseconds, while IPS averages around 6 or 7 milliseconds, and TN averages around 5 or 6. (These are averages encompassing all available panels of that type, some can be well below or well above that)

So, as a result of the response times, VA panels tend to have a greater amount of ghosting which makes them unsuitable for competitive and fast-paced gameplay that demands high accuracy. Like I said, it's more than just about how the colors and shades are displayed, the panel needs to be up to the task for gaming, and VA is the worst type for that. It's better off used for production and general use rather than gaming since you're not doing much with it.

So if anything, look at reviews for TN and IPS panels on sites like rtings that go into depth on color, black uniformity, etc. Avoid VA, the vast majority of panels of that type are just terrible for gamers and it's disgusting that there's so many monitors being marketed as "gaming" monitors with that panel type. The major benefit of VA is that they're perfect for curved displays because the viewing angles work out a bit better than IPS and TN.
