rtx 3080 hdmi 2.1 and gsync
I have a 4k monitor 144hz, but it has only hdmi 2.0 and display port.
I want to buy a new 4K monitor 144hz with hdmi 2.1.
Can I use Gsync with hdmi 2.1 ?

DisplayPort 2.0 was released back in June 2019. However, not for the public. Public release was meant for late 2020, but been delayed. Covid, newer motherboards, etc.

DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 also brings all of these capabilities to USB Type-C connectors, just as the industry prepares for USB 4. Which is another reason for the delay.
oh nice, but I hope it will be with RTX 4080, so not before 2023...

I broke down and bought a 6900XT 2 weeks ago. I was surprised to find it only has 1.4. I thought 2.0 was already out. Oh well.

only use hdmi as a last resort

use dp or dvi-d if you can first, then hdmi if there are no better options available

if you can use something else, do it
if hdmi is the only other choice, then you need to use it

that would be fine if it has no other connection types (other than vga)
but vga is actually a faster signal type than hdmi, but not digital or having hdcp protections

But as far as the Monitor you have now goes, it will require you to use DP to use all of the full features that it advertises. How does what you have now have anything to do with HDMI 2.1 and it's capabilities?
I will send an email to Nvidia, they will tell me if I can use Gsync compatible monitors with hdmi 2.1, and if there is a plan to use Gsync module with hdmi 2.1 and not only display port.
And the RTX 3080 is not display port 2.0 but 1.4

I didn't read all the posts.

G-Sync does work on hdmi 2.1 provided that your graphics card is a series 20 or later. Considering that yours is a series 30, then yes it works. Half way down the page....

Yes, Gsync and Gsync Ultimate have a module in the monitor, it's the best, and they have a high range for gsync, like 1-144hz or 30-144hz.
Gsync compatible have most of the time a range of 48-144hz, and has no module, and some times from my experience, I had stutters, but with the module, never.
That's the difference.
Gsync ultimate is for Gsync module + HDR.

ah Okay, thanks.

the gsync module in the display will draw about an extra 10-20w even when the monitor is off
so gsync monitors are about 50-60w vs 30-40w for freesync displays

just sayin, it will have no impact on real world electric bill or power draw in a house/apartment
its just that the new cali display efficiency laws are reflecting this, the monitors need to be labeled as 'variable refresh gaming' monitors to fall under the less efficient category

My bad, not sure why I kept thinking RTX 30 comes with DP 2.0
It has DP 1.4A
