Is gsync/freesync bad when your fps gets too low?
I was reading a review on an asus tuf gsync monitor (vg27aq) and the reviews stated that the monitor's responsiveness became pretty awful when in-game fps dips too far below the monitor's native refresh. The monitor in question is a 165hz. Would it be better to look for a monitor with a lower refresh or am I understanding this wrong? Thanks in advance

I can't comment on the monitor you speak of but that isn't my experience with Gsync. I run high settings in games and I'm usually at 240fps (limited) but in some situations in some games fps can drop as low as 80 and I don't notice response issues or tearing or any other problems. I have a 27" 240hz G7.

No, that's why both were invented.
When your fps is below your refresh rate, the monitor tries to match the fps with lowering the refresh rate

Not on screens worth buying.

The whole point of the tech is to allow it to reduce refresh as needed. Most will go down to 40-45hz, which is pretty low at that point.

I have two such screens, one is FreeSync Standard with 45-75hz, the other is FreeSync Premium/Gsync and does 45-165, both work as intended with no noticable issues when lowering to match fps.

I think it might depend on the model. At least for my Acer XG270HU, all I get is just get some slight flicker when it drops to around 30fps.

There are monitors that are gsync enabled (and include the hardware controller) and monitors that are gsync compatible (no hardware controller), check nvidia's website for gsync listed monitors. Check reviews on ones that interest you.

Not saying compatibles are bad, just that there may be a difference in quality depending on who makes it.

I guess it is by the monitor spec.
It has range of support.

which is why gsync/freesync is useless on a 60hz display

if the fps cant hold 60+ you need a better gpu and/or cpu or lower settings til it can

on a 120+hz display freesync/gsync a must, since a decent gpu may not hold 120 or displays max refresh rate+ in fps
but when it drops below the native refresh rate, gsync/freesync will sync the refresh rate to the gpus output

but below 60fps will start to look like a slideshow next to a 165+hz display
