UMD disk in a CD player?
On another site, a person is asking if you can buy a CD player that plays UMD disks. He saw an Indian movie where an actor did that. I assume he means a music disk. The movie could have faked it and just pretended it played.

EDIT UODATE: Look at the screen cap in this thread. It does look like there is an indentation on the tray just for a UMD disk. But the disk does not look like it is sitting into the hole correctly.

As I said, there is no media player for the UMD. It is probably a modded disc drive to avoid trouble with copyright.

Yes there is, its called a PSP. PSP, and UMD have been dead since 2014 so there isn't anything currently using it, just as there aren't HD-DVD players or Betamax players.

I'm not sure what "copyright" trouble you think there would be with a movie faking the use of a UMD, but it is far more likely this is just movies doing movie things and the UMD is just a prop.

PSP is not a media player, it is just portable video game. Media Player is different from portable video game.

Also, nm wavelength mean nothing, unless it is equal or less to code on the disc.

What would you call a device that played games, played music, and played movies?

The PSP also had a vast array of multimedia features such as video playback, and has been considered a portable media player as well.

PlayStation Portable Wiki [en.wikipedia.org]

So while you may think its not a media player; most people at the time of its release considered the PSP a portable game console and media player, you know because it supported multimedia playback to "play media" such as music and movies. Again, just because it wasn't successful as a product for doing those things doesn't mean it wasn't a media player.

If you are referring to psp, then it is portable video game.

the umd disc has a metal center with a small square hole, held to the psp spindle by a magnet

Are you sure about that?

nvm, yeah they do have a metal retention in the center that magnetically mounts to the spindle of the drive. So yeah you'd probably have to remove that piece to mount the disc to a CD/DVD drive spindle.

if you remove that, you remove the centering of the disc
players have very little tolerance

I don't get it, why do you want to do this? There are lots of documented ways of ripping UMD discs using a PSP with custom firmware, but there is no means that I'm aware of to play the actual discs without a real PSP.

As for movies, practically anything worth its salt released on UMD was also released on DVD. Also, they were really low resolution, typically 480x272.
