Of course it can have issues when the battery is low, as it can impact the wireless signal and such and thus you may see delays or latency in responsiveness of the controls
My old DS3 controller wore out years ago and only works when plugged into USB. I keep meaning to pry it open and look for a replacement battery, but I'm fine with my 8bitdo Pro 2 and it's sensibly-designed battery compartment that accommodates both the battery pack that came with it and regular or rechargeable AAs.
Also, supposedly, rechargers for plain old alkaline batteries are now a thing.

Might be time to just replace the controller. You can often find them cheap nowa days.
the sony ds3 is picky on what it charges from
i have a pack with sony usb charge module that can charge them
i recently replaced a bunch of ds3/4 controller batteries for a friend
ds3/4 took 523450 3.7v 1000 mah pack with 2mm jst connector
the off brand controller may be slightly different
if you want to take it apart and measure its battery and check the connector, it should not be difficult to find a replacement that would fit
the number is dimensions, 5.2mm thick x 34mm width x 50mm length
