Boot failure when restarting Windows

My motherboard is Gigabyte B460 Aorus Pro AC Rev 1.0

It seems like the PC always starts fine but will randomly often show "boot failure detected" when restarting, and only when restarting. Everything turns off momentarily (fans, etc.) and back on again, then the splash screen and then goes to the prompt. I just "load optimized defaults" once at the prompt and it starts fine, but it's kind of troubling. Although it has seemed to start anyway if I attempt a couple times to reboot without changing anything, I always have to turn Secure Boot back on which isn't on by default.

I have what appears to be the latest BIOS version. It did the same thing when I had optimized defaults on, before I needed secure boot turned on. Now I never have it default because I always turn secure boot back on (this isn't related).

Oh also, forgot to mention, it was having the same issue with the previous BIOS version as well. When it would also sometimes fail to actually shut down when shutting down Windows.

It could be a corrupt Windows partition. If you can't find another solution, I would consider reformatting the drive and clean-installing Windows. You can back up important data in One Drive or on a storage drive beforehand. Last resort, if nothing else works.

Some can confidently repair the Master Boot Record but if you're not experienced with that, a clean installation (which re-does the partitions of your boot drive) would prob. do the job.

I would swap the cmos battery for a new one.

This would be my first thought, and disable fast startup too, if you have an ssd then its not needed anyway.

Edit; Just to clarify. With some boards the OS not shutting down completely, (which it doesn't with fast start and hibernation enabled), can lose track of the boot drive and will produce a failed boot error.

I've had Fast Startup disabled as a result of troubleshooting the same/similar problem earlier.

Before, in addition to this current issue, it would also sometimes stay on (all the fans, lights, etc.) and not actually shut down when I would often shut down Windows (it would sign out and just go to a blank screen). That seems to be have been "resolved" but it recently has been failing when restarting Windows.

Similar behavior will also happen if your cmos jumper is left on the wrong pins.
