Yes it can output to external display at up to 3840x2160 (4K)
But it does this through GPU upscaling. It is not uncompressed native res.
Xbox Series X / PS5 do the same thing. It is not uncompressed native res either.
but for streaming, or desktop use it can output 4k with no problems
It's not magic. The video output can handle 4k, but trying to run a demanding AAA game at that resolution on the Deck isn't a reasonable ask. It is still a 15 watt APU after all.
If you want to play docked, try running it at 720p upscaled to 1080p or 4k using AMD FSR.
But you're talking about like base ps4 level of gpu performance.
Maybe lowest settings 1080P should work.
But you buy the SteamDeck to play on the go. You have your big Chungus Gaming rig if you want to play at 1080P or even 4k.
And on mobile, you don't notice that you play on low/mid settings as hard, since it's harder to see the difference between those render distances, when your res and screen are not that big
but not a chance by itself
Yet, you get my point that it's still low res on a small screen so you won't see the low graphics anyways. Or at least not that much
1200 x 800
skinnier and taller than 16:9
and about half the pixels of 1080p
I wouldn't really try and expect much out of a device made for such a resolution at something like 4K, let alone 1080p.

OK but like I can run stuff like Stardew Valley in 1080 on an external screen with no slowdown or input delay....right?
Even 4k wouldn't surprise me
That's what I was thinking... I'm not really into most cookie-cutter AAA turds, but damn I mean almost $700 like is that really better than a decent Win7 refurb laptop?
But it's also mor portable and you also pay for the experience as a whole.
From what I've seen in linus tech tips video on it. They've put a lot of effort into designing the os and making everything as user friendly as possible.
If it's worth it for you, thats something you have to decide with your wallet. But i think for 500 bucks that the mid tier model costs, it's pretty damn alright.
