Steam Deck Performance - Elden Ring?
So I've heard there are a lot of performance issues with Elden Ring... Has anyone tried it on the Steam Deck?

And how does the Steam Deck performance for any given game compare when playing on the deck's built-in screen versus playing to an external screen through HDMI? Is the deck a viable replacement for a new PC to play AAA games, or not really?

Steam Deck screen itself is 1280x800
Yes it can output to external display at up to 3840x2160 (4K)
But it does this through GPU upscaling. It is not uncompressed native res.
Xbox Series X / PS5 do the same thing. It is not uncompressed native res either.

Wow, really? But it can run in 1080 and 4k when HDMI'd up to an external screen, right?

You don't want to run the Deck at native 4K. It won't be able to handle that.
depends, when running games natively, no
but for streaming, or desktop use it can output 4k with no problems

The steamDeck only has a 720P res and since the display and res are so small/low, medium/low settings should be enough
Also Protondb shows very good Linux compatability. If you are ok with lowering your settings. It should work. It even is SteamDeck verified!

It's not magic. The video output can handle 4k, but trying to run a demanding AAA game at that resolution on the Deck isn't a reasonable ask. It is still a 15 watt APU after all.

If you want to play docked, try running it at 720p upscaled to 1080p or 4k using AMD FSR.

Nah. of course you COULD do that.
But you're talking about like base ps4 level of gpu performance.
Maybe lowest settings 1080P should work.
But you buy the SteamDeck to play on the go. You have your big Chungus Gaming rig if you want to play at 1080P or even 4k.
And on mobile, you don't notice that you play on low/mid settings as hard, since it's harder to see the difference between those render distances, when your res and screen are not that big

if its streaming from a capable host, yes it could do 4k at 60fps
but not a chance by itself

Sure, and it's also this weird 16:10 and not 16:9 res. those few pixels more shouldn't have any major impact on performance. Maybe 1 frame or so, but that's in the margin of error imo.
Yet, you get my point that it's still low res on a small screen so you won't see the low graphics anyways. Or at least not that much

its the WXGA standard
1200 x 800

15:10 or 3:2
skinnier and taller than 16:9

and about half the pixels of 1080p
1280 x 800 (presuming it is this and not 1200 x 800) would be the 16:10 "width equivalent" of the 1280 x 720 16:9 resolution. It's the "same, but slightly taller" 16:10 sibling to it, much like 1920 x 1200 would be to 1920 x 1080, or like 2560 x 1600 would be to 2560 x 1440. 1280 x 800 was a common laptop resolution in the late 2000s, before 1366 x 768 displaced it.

I wouldn't really try and expect much out of a device made for such a resolution at something like 4K, let alone 1080p.

OK but like I can run stuff like Stardew Valley in 1080 on an external screen with no slowdown or input delay....right?

Stardew valley and all those other indie/pixel games with no heavy effects work should have absolute zero problems with 1080P.
Even 4k wouldn't surprise me

That's what I was thinking... I'm not really into most cookie-cutter AAA turds, but damn I mean almost $700 like is that really better than a decent Win7 refurb laptop?

I mean the parts in the SteamDeck aren't that bad.
But it's also mor portable and you also pay for the experience as a whole.
From what I've seen in linus tech tips video on it. They've put a lot of effort into designing the os and making everything as user friendly as possible.
If it's worth it for you, thats something you have to decide with your wallet. But i think for 500 bucks that the mid tier model costs, it's pretty damn alright.
