Thoughts on Dolby Atmos
Doly Atmos has "objects" and can work on a 7.1 AV receiver that has Atmos decoding. But could you "fool" a 7.1 receiver that does not do Atmos? Send the two height objects to the rear speakers. The receiver would not know that it is getting height info and not rear channel info. I don't know how the decoding is done in the receiver. This would require a fan-made "hack" program as best as I can guess.
Is this any way possible?

Same as Dolby Atmos or DTS you have to make a good software to do so and 2 powerfull speaker. You can't make Virtual surround on bad speakers. You will not hear it.

atmos can be re-encoded to anything, stereo to 7.1 or better

if the speakers are positioned close to the standard 7.1 config, then it could just take the 7.1 info for sounds directly to the its speakers
https://www.dolby.com/about/support/guide/speaker-setup-guides/7.1-virtual-speakers-setup-guide/#gref

this is where atmos shines
for a stereo/5.1/7.1 source, it takes that info, and converts it to where the speakers are in your setup, and plays sounds from each location through the speakers nearest to them

you will get sounds from the higher rear channels if they are located somewhat near the standard rear 7.1 speaker sources

if the receiver does not have atmos, it will not be able to decode atmos, something else would need to decode atmos and re-encode as 7.1 to fit your speaker config

or just use 5.1/7.1 and would need to position speakers close to the guide above

This is what I mean. Some cheat/hack program after the Atmos output. But before the output to the HDMI. That converts it to look like 7.1 instead of 5.1+2. And place the speakers in a 5.1+2 position.
But, I will have to spend to ~$400 to get a new receiver :(

Is that how it works? I thought 7.1 was the upfiring speakers in the center front?

In Atmos, that is true. But there was 7.1 before Atmos. You add two rear speakers to a 5.1 setup and move the 5.1 side/rear speakers more to the side. There were no height speakers before Atmos.
Like posted above. This is what I have now: https://www.dolby.com/about/support/guide/speaker-setup-guides/7.1-virtual-speakers-setup-guide/#gref

Oh ok interesting. I basically just assumed the two were attached at this point sine I don't here much about 7.1 without atmos nowadays and I really don't pay much attention to speakers but I did get a budget surround sound speaker system (wireless) for my room and I'm impressed like an audio pleb would be.

the source could output 7.1, check its options
doesnt need to know the rear speakers are not in the correct positions

I don't grock. Sounds like you are saying I could do traditional pre-Atmos 7.1 when I enable Atmos on the PC. That is the opposite of what I want.

if the receiver doesnt support atmos you cant use atmos

games already do atmos style decoding to output 5.1/7.1/stereo

if the speakers are pointed in odd directions or locations, you might be able to tweak that in windows speaker config settings
or the sound card control panel
