if the speakers are positioned close to the standard 7.1 config, then it could just take the 7.1 info for sounds directly to the its speakers
https://www.dolby.com/about/support/guide/speaker-setup-guides/7.1-virtual-speakers-setup-guide/#gref
this is where atmos shines
for a stereo/5.1/7.1 source, it takes that info, and converts it to where the speakers are in your setup, and plays sounds from each location through the speakers nearest to them
you will get sounds from the higher rear channels if they are located somewhat near the standard rear 7.1 speaker sources
if the receiver does not have atmos, it will not be able to decode atmos, something else would need to decode atmos and re-encode as 7.1 to fit your speaker config
or just use 5.1/7.1 and would need to position speakers close to the guide above
But, I will have to spend to ~$400 to get a new receiver :(
Like posted above. This is what I have now: https://www.dolby.com/about/support/guide/speaker-setup-guides/7.1-virtual-speakers-setup-guide/#gref
Oh ok interesting. I basically just assumed the two were attached at this point sine I don't here much about 7.1 without atmos nowadays and I really don't pay much attention to speakers but I did get a budget surround sound speaker system (wireless) for my room and I'm impressed like an audio pleb would be.
doesnt need to know the rear speakers are not in the correct positions
games already do atmos style decoding to output 5.1/7.1/stereo
if the speakers are pointed in odd directions or locations, you might be able to tweak that in windows speaker config settings
or the sound card control panel
