Do you use a Raspberry Pi?
All the parts have arrived for a full Pi 4 desktop, except for the official keyboard.

What Operating System should I put on the MicroSD?

The other option is to simply get a USB thumb drive, they are extremely cheap these days for 128GB and the like.
Got two 250 gigabyte drives for it.

What's the difference between Pi 3 and Pi 4 when it comes to something like a NAS?
I wouldn't have thought that much.

One of the main differences with the Pi4 is unconstrained Gigabit Ethernet (on Pi3 it went through the USB controller slowing it down).

I don't like USB drives. They get lost, they're slower, and aren't good for hard storage. Since data on them degrades overtime. I generally avoid storing important files on them, unless it's to transfer to someone else's (outside of my house) computer.

I've never had problems with USB drives, let alone degradation.

My Pi3B+ Media Center had a 2TB USB drive for about 2years and it never failed.
Thanks, so it would be limited by USB 2.0(?) Speeds?

When I was saying about degradation, I was saying more for very long term storage, on the extreme. Not enough to stop me using one for small data here and there, but not something I want to store important files on.
Sorry if there's confusion, I didn't mean it as a 'it always happens and very fast!'
Some Pi cases like the newer Argons (highly recommended) have a small expansion board that supports an M.2 Sata card. And the UASP support greatly optimizes USB transfer speed.

If I remember right the Pi4 has 2 USB 3.0 ports, but generally yes you would be limited to USB 2.0 speeds.

No ♥♥♥♥ Sherlock.
You should use the Raspberry pi OS or a Linux Distro like Linux Arch or Debian

Having bluetooth speaker issues with Ubuntu Mate, I'll get other cards to swap distributions.
