Is it worth getting a small SSD (120 GB) for a really old laptop for just OS and Applications if it replaces the dvd drive/burner ?

Sure, put the OS on to the SSD and it will run like new.

If it's just a server leave it as-is, unless the mechanical drive causing issues.

The main reason is because we accidently bought a SMR WD Blue 2 TB Hard Drive :(

It works well for large data transfer but when actually using it even without remoting into it feels very slow. At least slower than the previous 1 TB hard drive.

Though maybe it is not that big of a deal.

When using a internet browser on my main gaming pc and controlling things like server application settings on the home server I guess through a local browser address I don't notice it nearly as much. Weird.

First look if the motherboard is compatible with a SSD
Transfer rate in Mo/s or Mb/s
If yes take a SSD if no take a HDD

Why take a SSD if is the transfer rate is restrict


And is better to have at least 240Go or more , in my opinion

as long as you don't store something demanding ex:games it is worth it
even with limited transfer you have 500 mb/s transfer speed which is better than hdd and also no response time

Oh yeah. I once put an ssd into an ancient core 2 duo (e4600, i think) pc and it was as fast and responsive as my main gaming pc on the desktop, basic programs, browser etc.

Definitely worth it for any pc.

^ same here, quite a few laptop refurbs I have running the cheapest SSD on sale (the 120gb A400 for $22) and combined with a cheap optical caddy like this[www.amazon.com] for the original HDD or an upgraded 1/2Tb 2.5" makes a nice budget-friendly upgrade

Whats the laptop specs? Some laptops are really slow due to cpu speed, etc... Replacing the drive will likely move the bottleneck to another part which is normal. It's the same as any pc it's just what is or will become the slowest part.

If the large mechanical drive you got is a 5400 rpm one it might be really slow during some things but ok during others.

Not sure about the merits of getting a d-ramless ssd?

How many drives can you stick in the laptop? Any videos on youtube showing what the results might be?

A 5400 rpm should be working fine as a home server. Disable windows updates each month? There's some win 10 optimization guides on youtube.

even with an older slower laptop (celeron grade) a ssd makes it so much snappier
as long as it has enough ram for its tasks

Do you think OS and Applications (no games) will really ever use more than 60 to 80 GB ever ? (Don't want to fill it up sense that is bad for any drive)

Yes it is Windows 10 Pro but still. Though yes I know windows gets bigger all the time.

240 to 250 GB is only $5 more seems to be the better choice. Do not see using more than 150 GB or even 100 GB.

Every PC that has at least SATA 3.0gbps should have an SSD by now. Especially given how cheap and reliable they are. Otherwise whatever PC you use will always be dirt slow. 250GB is the smallest I would suggest and even the good Samsung ones are under $50 USD. Go with too cheap of an SSD and you might as well not bother, sure it'll be better then any HDD at first, then probably up and die without warning. Yes stay away from cheaper QLC based SSDs. Look at the drive specs if un-sure. Ones such as Samsung 860 EVO are very good and reliable.
