[Serious Question] How do you guys cope with the GPU/Chip shortage?
I am not seeking to break reply-records here.

This is just a question stuck in my mind and my screen almost daily. And I have nobody to talk about this to, who 'knows' the feeling of a PC gamer.

My plan was simple: skip the GTX ... sorry, "RTX" 20xx gen completely and wait for Nvidia and AMD to ship their 'true (2nd) next gen' GPUs in autumn of 2020.

Now, we all know how this went down.

Even with a bit of money in my wallet, I am not going to throw it away. These prices - much like a day trader stock market - are surging up and up and up. Even 'non-gaming' GPUs like the GT 710 or 1030 have doubled in price! Pure insanity.

I guess, for the first time in my life, I see myself falling down the hardware spec ranking and holding on to the couple old (and very old) AMD/Nvidia GPUs, I still have.

2-3 years ago, I even gave my old graphic cards away for free to my close friends. Not anymore.

My question is:

"What is YOUR strategy, for the next 12-24-36 months?"

"Do you believe that the graphic card market will EVER 'fall back' to the pricing of yesteryears?"

(I personally doubt that very much! The demand will stay high and the price range has shifted for the worse and will stay there? Consumers show they are willing to pay 'more for less' and the low-entry (sub US200) and mid-range (below US400) graphic card market will never be the same, imho.

Do you disagree?

On top of that, Intel hardware guru Pat Gelsinger said the other week that he thinks the general 'chip shortage' will stay for 'a couple of years' even.

Car manufacturers are already feeling the pain. SSD controllers are drying up = prices are rising soon.

Is this the "Chipocalypse" for custom PC builders?

Do we have to see which old graphic card can still run the next new game?

Are GAME DEVELOPERS - always trying to make their games scale down and run on old hardware - even more inclined to 'slow down' with the hardware demands of their upcoming titles?

Are they stuck between having to answer to their marketing suits "We need to have RAY TRACING in our next game" and the reality of more and more PC gamers trying to play new games on older and older GPUs and overall hardware?

Sorry for the word salad. But would really appreciate comments on any of these questions, or what you have to say about this topic, in general.

Suddenly, those 'next gen' gaming consoles look more attractive then they ever had, in the past 30 years?

Don't have to cope with it because I bought 3080FE on third week from its release. Wanted a massive upgrade and decided to get in as soon as possible to get it. Didn't buy it from a scalper but straight from Nvidia.

If you bought them before the massive price increase they had pretty decent price going for them.

a buddy just spent $2000 for a 6900xt
msrp is $1000, and near identical performance to the $650 msrp of the 6800xt

can pay for itself after about a year of mining tho
or sooner if he watches the coin prices and trades accordingly

I feel like 'stuck' now
Summarizes it well.

As someone who went from a GeForce 6800 GS AGP (got this one used) to a GeForce 8800 GT to a GTX 560 Ti to a GTX 1060, nothing has come along to be a worthwhile performance jump at a similar price point. This is true even if you ignore the 2021 Etherium induced price hikes and only go by MSRP. Factoring that in, things actually go backwards relative to my last purchase. This doesn't bode well for enticing many people to upgrade.

Back in the late summer, I was thinking I would build a new PC as a Christmas present for myself. I would see what Nvidia and AMD had to offer by then. But then you could not buy any of them anyway. Before Christmas, there was the rumor of the 3080Ti. So I thought I would do it as a birthday present instead. My birthday is in June. Sigh. Maybe I can go back to it being a Christmas present in 6 months.
The good part is that I really do not need an upgrade. I am not playing anything new that needs the power. I was thinking of getting a VR after I upgraded. But I do not think I will like VR anyway.

I'll revisit the GPU replacement idea in summer 2022, I've got a GTX 1070 now that manages.

Personally I'm not excited about new games at all. I feel that video games in general are only getting better in graphic but lower in quality and content. So for me trying to get the best video card isn't a priority at all.
Plus, I kind of have a small pc parts accumulation of video cards and other stuff that'll do me just fine. And there's the fact that I only play at 1920x1080 and 60hz so my gtx 1070 Fe is totally adequate for that. The ray tracing thing generates no excitement from me either. *Shrugs*
I still keep going back to fallout 3 and New Vegas because those are just some games that are very hard to top. Same with the old GTAs. They just don't make games like that anymore. Everything now is a loot-fest cash grab that's released too quickly and quality is so subpar it's disgusting.
I find myself only using new games for benchmarking purposes rather than real entertainment.
Cheers!

i want advice too!!! my current strategy : 1.got GT 1030 the only affordable card 2.small monitor (1280x1024) 3.maximum GPU overclocking 4.play at 720p instead of 1080p . during redistenmt evil 8 testing (you tube video the game was expensive to actually download and test)i found that the shortage was SO HORRIBLE that it sent budget builder back to year 2015,2016 some old titles with DEAD multiplayer so can't play multiplayers titles due to shortage but can play very old games from 2016 and below meanwhile GT 1030 was my older PC card so i am furious since i was left without upgrade with my new PC :( GT 1030 was my best GPU since i was grown in eastern bloc this is my 1st proper rig and with proper budget-mid range graphics but sadly shortage RUINED everything now i am forced to wait 1 YEAR for a proper graphics card (like gtx 1050 ti)

I was just playing fallout 3 in 1920x1080 and dsr 4k upscale and what a beautiful gaming experience it was. I really had so much fun. I literally felt like I was inside the game.
Same with New Vegas, game was absolutely stunning at this resolution.

The gt1030 never ceases to surprise me. I happen to own one (gddr5 variant) best $79 I ever spent. I was so impressed when I fired up BioShock Infinite and I was able to play it at 60fps and 1920x1080 and very high preset! I'm like what!! It chews right through e-sport titles like WOTs and L4D. Very strong little tyke indeed. I always laugh when people down-play the 1030 because clearly they never used one.
I kind of understand though, because I had such low expectations for it.
Cheers!

people like new games and not this card , most E-sport titles like CS:GO are aged from 2012 or before meaning that some of them can run on potato PC that a reason why it is still popular on steam charts can run smoothly on older computer without paying the heck out of your wallet for a needed hardware

Have a 1660 which works for the games I play. Any thing that requires more I'll just use game streaming services as a crutch for the game.
Bad 💀 Motha 2021 年 5 月 12 日 下午 8:16
1660 Ti or Super is just fine for pretty much any games at 1080p.
Above this the better GPU would be 1080 Ti or 2070 Super; like for say, 1440p

these cards are expensive and i don't own them

As someone else said about chasing the new hardware is pretty pointless. At this stage it does not make a whole lot of difference. Im running a 3090 in my mainly used rig and a 2080Ti upstairs both @ 4k and either runs perfectly at max/ ultra settings on any game I play. Best wait a little while really.

I think the cards will be higher in MSRP no matter what, even from a wholesale I buy from has gone up so imagine all markets will. Getting cards though is not that hard if you put the time in or do like someone I know and bait miners, he traded 2 x 5700 OC & 2 1080 used for a 3080 new as it will produce more mining power.

Its also about silent stock, no one really announces stock at the moment to keep it from scalpers. Some places only sell pre built pcs or bulk deals. Such as one place I shop sells 5x any 30 series as a bundle.

Advice - look in places you would not expect there to be 30s. Couple weeks ago I ordered 3 x 3080s from a catalogue and would have never expected them to be there, only reason I found them was my brother was looking for a gaming laptop he could get on credit. Turn over every rock, dont buy scalped cards.
