Why don't M.2 drives come with the screw...
970 Evo came in today and it didn't have the screw to hold it in place and feels like a slight bump could knock it loose. Already cloned old ssd and ordered the screws should be here 10/13

Because your motherboard includes the screw you need. The mobo also included a stand-off.

A random screw might not fit in the stand-off.

My motherboard has two M.2 slots, and neither one of them had a screw in it. Luckily(no pun intended), one of them has a heat sink with a thermal pad which screws down over the slot and that holds down the SSD. I have an ASUS X570 Tuf Gaming Plus btw. Not sure it that's SOP for ASUS or if they forgot to put the screws in.
It doesn't come installed. It comes in an accessory bag.

TUF GAMING X570-PLUS

Accessories
User's manual
I/O Shield
2 x SATA 6Gb/s cable(s)
1 x M.2 Screw Package
1 x Supporting DVD
1 x TUF GAMING Sticker
1 x TUF Certification card(s)
They don't come already on the motherboard. They come in a bag with the board.

Well I just found out my MSI board didnt come with the screws installed and no bag of screws either. Every screw and plastic baggy i put in another ziplock bag and nothing. I just dont understand why install the standoffs but not the screws. So now I am searching trying to find a place that might have them that i can grab after work and get it installed today instead of having to wait for shipping.

The last 3 motherboard I've had that support m.2 drives have all had the screw for the standoff. 2 x MSI and 1xAsus. The Asus has 2 m.2 slots. one on the board like normal and that came with the screw. The second is vertical and use a plastic clip so no screw. Was bad enough putting the vertical bracket in place. Already lost 1 of the 2 screws. Thankfully it's secure with 1 and the tiny screw is currently god knows were.

Point is you should have had the screw. It's common to overlook things when you or someone else builds the system. Annoying but take it as a learning experience. Double check you have ALL parts when you get something new. Even if you won't be using feature x then or in the near future. Things change.
Best bet is if you have extra M2 screws left over, install them onto empty m2 slot posts so you have them for later.

If you buy a prebuild or a laptop, it might not include them as extras for the system.

DIY builds it will come with the Motherboard. Many Motherboard now include a tool-less adapter to use in place of the M2 screw.
My motherboard didn’t need screws. You just stuck the M.2’s into clips. This is the future for motherboards.

Like always, it was very simple and they should have used it from the very start. I could see the need to use a screw inside a Laptop but the Desktop Motherboards should have had this tool-less from the start.

Like why did it take 20 years to get USB Type-C, it should have been that way from the start

if you remember the edo and the so-dimm slots, they just clipped in

nothing that holds any other pcb to the mobo uses screws, why they would do that for storage is beyond me
Forget it, Jake. It's Samsung.
This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
