Why don't M.2 drives come with the screw...
970 Evo came in today and it didn't have the screw to hold it in place and feels like a slight bump could knock it loose. Already cloned old ssd and ordered the screws should be here 10/13

Because your motherboard includes the screw you need. The mobo also included a stand-off.

A random screw might not fit in the stand-off.

With any sort of drive I've bought, nothing else was included. Anything else, including M.2 screws, should have been included with your motherboard.

Its not just a screw, there is also a stand-off so the M2 SSD will sit level once in the slot.
This stuff comes with Motherboard, always. Drives dont come with anything, period, why would it.

When you buy motherboards, install the stand-off + screw into one of the holed areas for all the M2 slot bays; so those never get lost. You should keep and have everything that came with your PC Case and Motherboard; like extra screws for example.

It would be good that m.2 drives come with a small screwdriver. (Or at least the mobo). When i bought my evo 960, i couldnt install it for 2 days before my father brought me small screwdrivers so i can unscrew the screw on the motherboard, put the m.2 and screw it again.

It's a standard phillips screw-driver; nothing special.

Well, its not just about desktop mobos anyway. I have a gaming laptop with two M.2 slots for NVMe drives and when I wanted to expand my disk space with additional SSD it occured to me I cant install it because there was no screw coming with the notebook or with SSD. It really sucks if you ask me.

those screws are normed. If you go to a PC repair storage they can proberly gift you one for free. Also depends on the manufacturer. Gigabyte normally has them already screwed on the motherboard whiel Asus only sends you a small packge with the motherboard containign the small screwes instead of having them preapplies as gigabyte.

Here is a kit if you need one for any system; 3x stand-offs + 3x screws
Enough for 3x systems worth; or a system using multiples.

Ok well sorry you had to do that; I'm not 100% sure about Laptops but with any Desktop Motherboard, it comes with those screws. Put them with your Case's screws left-over from a build and don't lose them. Keep what extras come with Case, Motherboard, Modular PSU

Usually M.2 screws can be found at a local hardware store.

The type you may be looking for is 2.0 x 3mm (CM2x3-3.3).

When i mis-placed; I just used a screw meant for 5.25 / 2.5 inch drives; the smaller threading; and those fit just fine.

I actually had to do a search for the measurements for the metric versions for a friend recently :-) But yeah same here. Measured the ones in my case...same as yours

In most Cases there are only a couple common threads.
Motherboard & 3.5 Inch is the thicker threading usually.
M2 stand-off / 5.25 / 2.5 inch drives are the smaller threading.
So yea very simple.

My motherboard has two M.2 slots, and neither one of them had a screw in it. Luckily(no pun intended), one of them has a heat sink with a thermal pad which screws down over the slot and that holds down the SSD. I have an ASUS X570 Tuf Gaming Plus btw. Not sure it that's SOP for ASUS or if they forgot to put the screws in.
