Weird issue on PC with Samsung HDTV, Disconnect/Reconnect device sound

Quick update: problem was resolved when I installed nvidia drivers 441.20 last month

In case anyone runs into this problem

My specs:

Motherboard: MSI B250 Carbon Pro
CPU: i7-7700k
RAM: G.Skill 16GB DDR4 2400 MHz (with the boost enabled from Motherboard, 2133 is default)
Storage: Samsung 960 EVO 250GB for OS 4TB HDD WD Caviar Black for everything else
GPU: MSI GTX 1080Ti
PSU: Corsair RM650i
OS: Windows 10 1903
I have two displays:
- ASUS ROG PG348Q G-Sync (3440x1440) via Display port
- Samsung UHD UN43NU6900 (3840x2160) via HDMI (with HDMI 2.0 compliant cable... idk the box the cable came in said it was)

So have had this issue for a while, since early 2018 about, where I am using the PC and Windows 10 emits the "Disconnect" followed by "Reconnect" device sound sporadically, can happen somewhere between every 30 minutes to an hour, its completely random.

Initially it was not an issue. But then it started causing problems while gaming, the screen will flash black while this is happening if I am in the middle of a game.

Just today I narrowed down the cause.

So the samsung tv supports full RGB, ycbcr 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 @60fps iff I enable "UHD Color Mode" on the HDMI port that is connected to the PC. Without this enabled, I am stuck on ycbcr 4:2:0 at 60hz.

Alright cool, this works. I can play games such as Witcher 2 at 2160p@60hz w/ full RGB. Otherwise, the only inconvenience is that I would have to play it at my desk with black bars on side if played on the ultrawide Asus monitor.

However, if I leave the UHD Color mode setting on after I am done playing, switch back to the Asus monitor (by pressing Win + P on keyboard and choosing to display on primary display only), Windows 10 will start sounding off the disconnect/reconnect sound again randomly every 30 min to an hour.

It is only after I disable UHD Color mode that this problem goes away completely. On one hand, relieved its not a serious problem that prevents me from gaming or being productive. On the other hand, does this mean I have a bad TV? or a bad GPU? or is it some bad design?

The other thing that is worth noting is while I am playing on the Samsung display, if I do not turn off the Asus monitor, i just let it go into standby mode, it will randomly power on again on its own throughout the session, display the "no signal" message, and then goes back into standby mode.

So I am wondering if anyone else has had this issue. I have spent almost a year trying to google search this problem, but now that I have narrowed it down, I am wondering if there is something in the nvidia driver that tries to ping the connected displays causing them to wake up. Almost a decade PC gaming, 3 rigs before this one, and I have never encountered a bizarre issue like this.

What I have done that has not helped:

- use USBView to see what exactly is connecting/disconnecting, it displays nothing
- set USB suspend state to disable in power settings
- disabled wake up timers
- updated to latest nvidia drivers
- looked through samsung tv settings, tried disabling/enabling everything possible to see if the problem can be mitigated
- bought and tried a few spare cables
- Swapped HDMI ports on both GPU and TV, even tried a HDMI to Display Port converter

The only solution seems to be to disable UHD Color mode. As annoying as it may be, I am curious to know how this feature works exactly, why do I need to enable it in order to stream full RGB at 60Hz, and why it may be causing this issue. If anyone can lend me support I would gladly appreciate it! T_T

try with another pc or console and other cables

may also be a grounding issue if the tv and pc are not on the same circuit breaker

Disable UHD color mode on the TV. All it does on that model is brighten the sub pixels to create the illusion of more color saturation.

Stick to RGB mode by using the NVIDIA Control Panel (NVCP) in the resolution settings.

Firstly, go to the “Desktop Size and Position” menu in NVCP. You will see an option to select what scales the display. Change that setting to “GPU” rather than “Display”.

That should fix your 4:2:2 color issues because RGB is far superior to YpBPR because it gives you the whole color gamut.

As for the connect/disconnect sound every 30 minutes. First thing you need to look at is in the “Universal Serial Bus Controllers” (has a list of all the USB ports attached to your PC) section in Device Manager. One at a time, right-click on each of them and select “Properties”. If it has a power management tab, make sure to disable the option “Let Microsoft Automatically Power Down The Device”.

If that doesn’t fix your connect/disconnect problem, disable GSync on your other monitor. Otherwise AFIK.

RGB mode via NVCP is not available unless UHD Color Mode is enabled on the tv.

I will look at the USB devices.

Have you tried disabling HDR in Windows display settings after enabling UHD colour on your TV?

My Samsung TV is a little newer but I've had similar issues, probably a downside of using a TV as a computer monitor.

yea i might just replace 4k tv with a 4k monitor, the price of the TV wasn't too bad, i could always give it away to a family member, just bugs me because i want to know what UHD Color Mode is triggering in Windows to detect a disconnect and attempt a reconnect.

I've also tried disabling HDR, its disabled right now actually, no luck.

Im having the same issue, but noticed that TV (being off) red led turns off and on, and Windows "Re-read" the connection, causing to reload "Explorer.exe" with a Windows eventID 4798
