Vega 56 or 5700
Hi I am considering upgrading my aging 9750 to a new gpu...I mainly game on 1080P, and not that often actually. I feel that the 5700 is not really worth the money, since its the first gen of rdna, and it feels like better cards (with aftermarket coolers) are about 2 months away)....is a vega 56 at this point of time a good upgrade, or is it better to wait till after market 5700 cards come out?

Wait for the aftermarket 5700.
Can also go for RTX 2060, not like you gone need more for 1080p anyway.
or an rx 580/590/1660 ti..if you play only in 1080p dont waste money on a high end card
Vega 56 all day. They are much cheaper and UV/OC Vega 56 will be close to 5700.

I strongly disagree with this approach. RTX 2060 is not the last graphics card in existence, and new games are really likely to keep coming out. Despite the resolution OP wants to play at, there's no reason not to buy the best card they can afford.

RTX 2060 can play 1440p comfortably with 60+ fps, it has pretty much GTX 1070, Vega 56 performance, more then enough for 1080p.
No one of those. From RTX 2070 or better because they have ray tracing even if the usage of it is minimal it is still an extra feautre that radeon dont have for now. My pc is RYZEN 7 1700 16 GB DDR4 3200MHZCL15 GS KIILL RIP JAWS GTX 970 G1 GAMING DELLP2416D 24'' 2560X1440 60 HZ IPS and if i wanted to buy a new graphics card i would had choose 2080ti(or 2070 super if i didnt want to spent lof of money) but never radeon.
You can currently pick up a Vega 56 and 64 for $200-$450 depending on the model, so sure if you can get one for cheap go for it.

AMD stock coolers are actually quite decent especially compared to those of Nvidia. The 5700 has respectable performance and is relatively quiet. AMD however does use a graphite pad instead of thermal paste which hurts it's cooling performance. So if you go for a reference 5700 and feel like doing some tinkering on the card I recommend swapping the pad for paste. Be aware that doing this might void warranty with cards from certain manufacturers.

You will have to decide if it's worth paying double for Ray Tracing. A feature which barely anything uses, provides only slightly graphical improvements and destroys your gaming performance.

Also AMD does have ray tracing. And it's all open source unlike the Nvidia RT malware. It's ray tracing tech is just not aimed at consumers, it's aimed at prosumers.

I have never seen anyone push for AMD RT yet. You know why? Because it's useless for gaming. Look past the Nvidia marketing.. RT in it's current state is useless for the average user. It's drawbacks aren't worth the minuscule gains.

Your comment appears to me as very biased towards Nvidia for no reason other then "AMD does not have ray tracing" which is an incorrect statement.

Which is why as i said iam waiting for RTX 3080TI instead of buying 2080ti because then ray tracing support and perfomance will be much better. However for soemone who cant wait until then and wants to upgrade graphics card right now Nvidia is the best choise noit only because of ray tracing but also because of perfomance since amd dont have something with 2070 super 2080 super and 2080 ti perfomance yet

For how long? A year? Two? RTX 2060 will become insufficient for 1080p max settings sooner or later, so if OP can afford something better - they should definitely go get it.
Thank you for the replys, well frankly I will never havine interest in nvidia products, due to some of their business practices, as well as general fan base that feels more toxic than amd's (fanboys). I was thinking vega 56 more so than anything else, since I saw one for $300, and even though 5700 is available for $50, and offers a new architecture, I think it is somewhat infentile in its design, mainly the cooling system, and also, I did not notice that many new cool features...at least ones that I would be interested in. also the 5700 seems to overheat qite a bit, unless some of the info I found is off...

Your info isn't off, the stock cooler literally cooks the card.

But, there's that sharpening feature thing that AMD recently put out, it's actually really good.
Although, you may be able to do that with the Vega series, I don't exactly recall.
Both are good cards, though I would lean on the 5700 over the 56, unless you can get the 56 for a decent chunk cheaper.

Dont overlook the Vega 64.

I use it as a daily driver for 4K/60 High/Ultra without issues in most games, with very few requiring anything lover than a step below top on settings.
^^, yes when it comes to the temps, I agree, the coolers are not the best...

Afaik for now FidelityFX is only available on new cards. Although I expect them to add this feature to pretty much any their card for the last few years. It's just a simple postprocessing feature.
