Problem with connecting PS3 controller to Steam
Hello, I used to play many games with my PS3 controller, but after not using it for a while and trying again, it wouldn't work anymore.

I used to use the SCP program, which still works wonderfully in the sense that in the test window it registers every button press as it did before. Thus I know the device works, the inputs work, and everything should be fine.

However, Steam does not recognize the controller at all, and inputs are not registered in-game.
I looked around and seems like many people had the same problem, so I followed in their footsteps. Uninstalled SCP, downloaded and installed PSNow, enabled the Steams controller software. Now Steam recognizes the device immediately no issue, but doesn't receive any of the input!!

I tried re-installing SCP, Steam loses sight of the controller and yet SCP sees the input just fine in test mode.

I'm at my wit's end right now, with no idea what to try. I'm not sure if installing PSN installed/updated the drivers on my controller, or not, so I tried doing it manually. Except for the driver, the file wasn't there where the guides said it would be.

Can I get the proper DualShock 3 drivers from somewhere so I can try manually installing them? Am I doing something stupid? Should I do something else?

All you have to do is enable Playstation controller support in the Steam controller settings. Steam input will them make sure it works with any controller supporting game.

Does that work with DualShock 3 controllers?

You don't need the ScpToolkit at all. What ScpToolkit does is present the outputs of the PS3 controller as an Xbox controller. Steam Input provides the same functionality.

Make sure you have the Scp driver uninstalled and then reboot the computer.

I dont have the Scp drivers installed and I get nothing. I also dont have PSNow installed.
I guess I need one of those for windows to even see my PS3 controller.
To be honest I have never had much success with steams controller support options.
Does it do anything if you go into Big Picture Mode controller settings and check Playstation Configuration Support?
No, I get nothing. Dont worry about it though. I dont use my DS3 much but thought it would be nice to use as backup when my PS4 controller battery is low.

library -> select game -> properties, and controller config
you can change how each controllers inputs are handled

As I stated, when I do this, Steam does recognise the controller, but doesn't recognise any input. So this is not the solution. SCP recognises input, but makes Steam blind to the controller.

Yes, I can make Steam recognise the controller, but Steam still wont recognise any of the input.
I finally got my controller to work on my own.

I re-installed SCP to get the xinput recognised. Then I downloaded XBOX 360 accessories to have my SCP disguise the controller as a XBOX 360 controller.

Now Steam picks up my DS3 controller as an XBOX controller AND recognises the xinput!

It's not optimal, but it works!
Better to use DS4-Windows.
Then what you do is set this to "Start with Windows"
Then never have ANY game clients start with Windows, as the DS4 app/driver MUST startup before ANY game clients do. This method ensures this. Plus game clients can't "Run As Admin" if you have them in OS Startup.

DS4-Windows works with PS3, 4, 5 controllers.

I use DS4 windows for my bluetooth connected ps4 controller.
I have not been able to get DS4 windows to work for my wired PS3 controller
This has happened to me as well. Just enabled Playstation controller support but no inputs registered from my PS3 controller by Steam big picture mode or any game.
