Need Help Setting Up Dualsense PS5 Controller (Wireless)
I made a similar thread about a week or two ago, but I've hit a brick well in setting this up and wanted to start over with an OP that hopefully will help in finding me a solution.

I've been trying to get my Dualsense controller working with my PC, and specifically Steam. Originally it was working fine without any issues: I was using this old Bluetooth adapter[www.amazon.com] as it was the only one I had around the time, but after a few pairing attempts it was properly paired and Steam immediately recognized it as a PS5 controller. For the next few days I would be able to use it just fine, though there were occasions where I would have to turn the controller on multiple times to register (the lights would blink for a few seconds, then shut off. Had to hit the Guide button a couple more times but it would work afterwards).

At a certain point, it stopped working entirely; no matter how many times I would hit the Guide button or how many times I would disconnect and re-pair the controller, the same issue would happen every time.

It was suggested that I try a 4.0 Bluetooth adapter, since the one I was using was 2.0. I ordered this one[www.amazon.com], which arrived today, and gave it a try. It paired right away, and Steam once again recognized the controller and loaded up the proper profile.

Only none of the buttons would work, and only the analog/d-pad would work half the time, with a huge time delay. I tried other ports on my PC, made sure no other bluetooth devices were connected, same result. I also tried both of my PS5 controllers, so the controller isn't the issue (and it still works fine when directly connected, but I'm going for wireless or nothing).

I also tried this 8bitDo adapter[www.amazon.com], as it was the only one reported to work on PC. It paired with the controller, but as an Xbox 360 controller. Still wouldn't work with Steam regardless. And yes I did update the firmware on the 8bitDo.

I even tried DS4Windows, which was also working fine until I decided it was no longer needed since Steam could already do all the controller configurations with a far simpler interface. Now even DS4Windows won't recognize either of my controllers.

Another thing I found were these manual settings for the 8BitDo adapter:

CREATE + UP = Xinput mode

CREATE + LEFT = Dinput mode

CREATE + RIGHT = Mac mode

CREATE + DOWN = PSC mode

CREATE + L1 = Switch mode

CREATE + UP + LEFT = MD mode

I tested each one on Steam and got some interesting results:

Xinput: shows up as an Xbox 360 controller, full control

Dinput: shows up as 8BitDo Receiver, not every button works, heavy lag

PSC: shows up as "Generic Controller", all buttons except the touchpad and guide button work

Switch: shows up as a Switch Pro Controller. Again, can't map the touchpad

So until I can get Steam to recognize it as a PS5 controller, I won't get all the functionality I had before.

So I'm out of ideas. I do think the Bluetooth connection might be the culprit, but I'm not sure if I need a specific/stronger adapter or if there's some Windows 10 setting or driver that's interfering with my connection.

Please help me out.

Okay, I think I'm getting closer to figuring it out.

So what I did was go to Device Manager and turn off all Bluetooth devices, including hidden devices. Made sure to un-pair my controllers as well. I also took the 4.0 dongle out of my USB Hub and connected it to a free USB port on the back of my desktop.

Paired my PS5 controller again, and for a while it was working as intended. Steam picked it up and I launched a game to test it out (Sonic CD, which is actually coincidental considering my avatar).

It was working, but it wasn't perfect. I could feel a slight delay in lag input but it was pretty stable. Then after about 5-6 minutes, the lag got really bad, where it would read inputs about 5 seconds or so later. On the positive side, my controller didn't shut off this time.

At this point, there's almost assuredly something that's messing with my Bluetooth connection and/or maybe impacting my system. I don't see anything in Task Manager that's eating away at my CPU or memory, and I doubt I have any viruses or malware, though I'll run Windows Defender to be safe.

Are there any other tests I could run, programs to watch out for, etc?
Check for signal interference.

USB dongles have weak signals and are easily affected.

How would I do that?

Is there a setting or program that might clue me in? I have all my consoles and electronics in one room, but they've never interfered with the signal before.

Edit: One thing I did add recently was a TP Mesh setup, with one right in my room and right on top of my desktop in fact: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06WVCB862/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

But are those devices known to interfere with Bluetooth? I wouldn't think they would.

Update time: the 5.0 Bluetooth dongle arrived. This one had a driver firmware from the official site, which I consider a good thing. Uninstalled all other Bluetooth devices and paired controllers just to be safe, paired the PS5 controller as a test and....

Same problem.

But that’s when I decided to test out my next theory: restart my PC without Steam running. Paired the controller again, and was able to verify all inputs in the Controller properties. Decided to fire up specifically non-Steam games, so I tried a couple of SNK games from Amazon (KoF ‘98, Metal Slug 3).

They ran without a hitch. I’ll test again later, but this leads me to conclude that Steam has been the issue all along, or at least a specific part of Steam.

I mentioned previously that I tried reinstalling Steam, and the issue persisted. I also tested both in and out of the Beta option too. I think it’s got something to do with the controller configurations, since that’s when the controller starts to ♥♥♥♥ up and eventually shut off.

So with the focus now on Steam, what are some specific files or settings I can delete? Again, it might be something wonky with the controller profiles/templates, so first I’d like to know how to remove those and start fresh.

I’m finally getting somewhere.

Again, I can confirm that I can play non-Steam games just fine, as I tried a couple through the Amazon and Xbox apps. The only thing missing was Rumble for some reason.

But yeah, safe to say there's something in Steam messing up with my inputs.
