Java update?

I think this is legit but I want to double check. One of my PC is asking to do a Java update outside of Windows updater. This is the important PC that I do banking with. I remember using the scanner once to deposit a check. I think that is why the Java is on this PC. It is linking to java.com and wants to update to version 8.

Just uninstall Java. You don’t need it and it’s a massive security hole.

The update is probably legit though as Java was last updated 2 days ago. 20th April 2021.

That is pure ignorance. If you use Java enabled applications you need it, Java is purely the JVM or Java Virtual machine simply put it's a way to run a sort of intermediate non-machine code instruction that is faster than an interpreted language but slower than a compiled language.

Many applications will actually use the Java virtual machine.

OK. Thanks for the replies. It is a legit update. But I am going to delete it anyway. If I need to scan a check again, the bank web site can ask for it to be installed again.

If your bank requires java on your pc, switch banks.

Only time you can consider Java non legitimate if it suddenly downloads from ANY other website but Oracles servers. In this case it's likely to be packaged with malware.

Very long running Minecraft player confirming this (Minecraft now comes bundled with a set version so you don't need to install it for that purpose, but I've dealt with Java for a long time mostly due to this). Additionally, Java in the browser isn't the same as the standalone version. You may only need one or the other. If it's for online banking, if what it is happens within a browser, you may not need the standalone version (you'll have to consult for yourself to confirm).

For at least the standalone version, Java will set a startup task called the "Java Update Scheduler" which will check for updates and offer a notice if one is found, and yes, I can also confirm a new version was pushed out recently as I also got that on a few of my PCs. It is legitimate.

Unlikely, as Flash is more or less dead, although it also handled this in a similar fashion.

You shouldn't have or need Java Runtimes or Adobe Flash installed anymore, remove those, no needs for them anymore.

Update: I remember better now. The Bank may have needed the Java to access the scanner but that was a few years ago 5? that I did that. The reason the Java is on now is that I installed a thingie to create a Dogecoin wallet. That needed the Java. I uninstalled the Java for now.

just like answer UNLESS YOU PLAY MINECRAFT OR PLAN TO PLAY IN THE FUTURE you can uninstall java or if you don't own minecraft you can buy windows 10 edition that doesn't need java with the ability to mod removed

MineCraft has not required Java Runtime for years.
Apps like this have the most updated files within the app files itself so it no longer requires the User/OS to have any such runtimes installed.

Adobe Flash is no longer needed as well because this is embedded in Web Browsers such as Edge and Chrome and get the updates when the browser gets updated to a new version.
