CPU throttling during strerss test
Hi all,
I have an i5-2400 running at stock settings, with speedstep and turboboost enabled in BIOS. So I did a stress test in prime95 to check if my temperatures were in the safe zone. After 30 minutes they reached at max of 60 C exactly. One thing I noticed when looking at HWinfo during the test is that the CPU was running at 3.1 GHz (x31 multiplier)throughout (stock speed), although one in like 15 secs it dropped to 1.6 GHz (x16 multiplier) for half a second then went back up to 3.1GHz. During this time the temp dropped to 45 C then went back up to 60 C. Never thoughout the test did it turboboost to 3.4 GHz. So my question is: is this normal? Or is the CPU thermal throttling when temps hit 60 C? From what I've read 60C is meant to be normal, so I don't see why it would downclock like this. All the readings were taken from HWInfo.
Thanks.

Which stress test did you use?

I would wager that this happened at the end of a loop of the test code, upon starting a new loop. That would be perfectly normal behavior and not "throttling" but exactly what you want from speedstep and turboboost.
I just turned on prime 95 and picked the top option whose description was 'high temps'. Thanks for the answer, glad its something thats meant to happen. It just made me wonder if it did throttle somehow, coz it always capped at exactly 60 C
