i have this motherboard Asus P5QL-EM what is the maximum memory

2x 2GB DDR2-1066 (yellow slots only)
or
4x 2GB DDR2-800 (max speed for populating 3 or more slots)

8GB MAX RAM

If the yellow slots are populated with 1066 RAM; you need to manually change RAM speed in BIOS to 800 prior to installing more RAM.

But yes, 2x 2GB in Yellow and 2x 1GB in the other two slots would work just fine.

If all the RAM is already 800Mhz or less, then leaving RAM setting in BIOS on SPD should be fine.

Can you even get 2 GB DDR2 sticks any more? Those with them will likely hang onto them. I have a bag with various old memory and a few 2GB DDR2 . I will be hanging onto them. You never know if they will be needed.
You could get used but would it be worth it?
If the potential upgrade is for gaming then it may be time to think about a new motherboard/CPU/memory upgrade option.

Some stores near me still sell new DDR2.
