A lot of modern motherboards are all marked out anyway. My Asus has every plug labeled, and most of the cables are named as well. It's just a matter of finding a matched pair and plugging them in.
You don't absolutely need one, but it's always nice to be safe than sorry.
The best advice I can give you is to relax, don't be intimidated and don't worry that you're going to break it. You'd be amazed how tough these things are, or how much force it takes to install RAM properly.
