True but what about a way to control it easily with like a Firewall like controller for it on top with a GUI ? If that is even possible.
Hardware or Software?
Software unless hardware is better.
Right now the router sits at about 1% CPU consumption 99% of the time. The dream machine pro works in IPS mode. If you want the swiss army knife of routers. Get a Mikrotik (These things go so deep into network engineering they are very complicated, extremely complicated) but incredibly flexible.
Windows "Advanced" firewall is actually pretty good.
Maybe and old machine and install an extra nic . Pfsense could be installed.
The software is free.
there are a few tools that allow you to control the Windows firewall more easily.
i'm using Windows Firewall Control by Sphinx Software (there is a free version so you can test it but ofcourse the paid versions have more to offer) if you want to have a look -
https://www.sphinx-soft.com/Vista/ (don't let the Vista fool you - it works on Win7 to Win10)
