The Steam client can only show an FPS counter, if you want more advanced information you need something like MSI Afterburner as you already have guessed.

Like Cathulhu said, MSI afterburner is the easiest with RivaTuner coming along with it. You're able to add what you want displayed on the screen mid game.

However, if you have an Nvidia graphics card you can hit Alt + R mid game and it will bring up all of the same info. I believe you need to have it enabled in Geforce Experience if this is an option for you!

You need to launch Afterburner and Riva Tuner. Need to have both working at the same time.

You can lock the fps with Riva Tuner, too, in case your CPU/APU/GPU is too damn powerful and you're getting like 1k fps or something, making some games unplayable.

I suggest you get HWinfo, too, and have it running on the background, along with both of the above. You can find many OSD options there that you won't find elsewhere.

Some games will show the system info clicking on the Tild key, the one above the Tab.

Once you tick to show onscreen in msi AB monitoring, apply and click OK and then RivaTuner should load down in notification area, click that and configure it to allow the actual OSD and how that will look. So install latest MSI AB + RivaTuner not just MSI AB
