you can google what each setting does.
shut down pc for the night
instead normal boot i started it up in safe mode to see what it would do
safe mode boot worked fine even tho it did NOT let me login using correct password
but it also did NOT crash on login screen
so i restarted one more time
i was able to login fine
but shortly after PC froze up again (music running + circle rotating near mouse curser )
restarted again
and im back in windows
ill give it a look
(left pc in sleep mode overnight - booted wake-up all fine - manually restarted pc from login screen and once back in windows -> full system freeze -> hard shut down -> reboot -> all fine again )
i restarted PC -> gone into bios and fully shut down pc from there (power button press )
to test if PC would boot up fine in the morning without freezing
huzzah !
im in windows without crashing on login screen after initial boot ( first time in a while )
ill test this again and see if this would be a work-around to avoid the crashes
left a bit confused considering as to why PC needs power to be gone to boot OK without crash after the night
like is there some data retained in the hardware space that is confusing the Windows when its booting and then makes it puke/bsod ?
thanks you
Turning off fast start supposedly disables this feature but I think it gets overridden by the power options settings.
In control Panel under power choose what the power buttons do, shutdown is probably already selected but if you click change settings that are greyed out you can uncheck the box that puts the computer into sleep. That will stop those options from overriding the machine shutdown.
it will force windows into a fake shut-down sleep state instead of actually shutting down when i specifically choose the option to "shut down" ?
should i untick the checkbox and remove sleep mode from power menu ?
shut-down is selected for power button that is correct
( sleep button set to sleep but i dont think i have that button )
2 differences i noticed
when i choose shut-down option in windows, there is a small blue blinking light on my PC top
when light is on im still able to wake up pc and get it to boot by pressing ctrl + esc key ( as set in bios )
when i press power button for few sec and PC powers down that blue light is NOT blinking and the only way to power on the PC is via its power button
In control panel power options / choose what power button does / click "change settings that are unavailable" and clear the sleep checkbox / save changes.
I do not know for sure but i think it overrides the shutdown and makes it sleep if that box is not cleared. Basically what you want to do is not have the machine sleeping, ever. With ssd drives there is no time saving because they boot so quickly so sleep is really not needed on a desktop pc.
ill keep an eye on the blue light when shutting down
otherwise i dont know of any other indicator telling me the PC is fully OFF (?!)
to ensure a fine boot and no freeze
Also, the hibernation file can be around 10gb on the c drive. if you google disable win 10 hibernation there is a powershell cmd to do it and it will reclaim that back to free space.
assuming the light should be off and PC should be in a full shut-down state when i tell windows to shut down yes ? as in - windows should usually do that if not otherwise told to keep PC in sleep/hybernation/ready-to-wake-up state ?
ty lots for info and insights carlsberg
but eventually crashed and rebooted by itself after some hours of idle
im assuming it was a bsod
during boot it was unable to find boot drive and sat in bios screen when i noticed
pc booted fine into windows after i forced it off by power button press
one thing i noticed after disabling the hibernate thing - the blue light on the PC top was not blinking when pc was shut off ( it usually blinks )
i thought it was fully powered off this time
