PC behaviour weird - crash on startup + bsod
hello !

pc is relatively new - it worked in this config for almost a year and still works fine when gaming for long hours without issues crashes or bluescreens

however

at some point the pc started freezing after i woke it up from sleep mode (bsod seconds after wake from sleep mode also happened multiple times )

restarting worked fine and pc didnt crash again after that initial reboot

pc continues to crash / bsod regularly (not every time ) after waking it up from sleep mode or doing a clean regular startup boot

today
the pc woke up from sleep mode - froze dead while i tried to enter my login data -
mouse courser could still be moved but everything else was frozen

random happenings ->

after pc bluesscreens / crashes and i initiate reboot - pc will stop at bios prompt telling me to f2 if i wanted to enter bios - if i dont press anything pc will not continue to boot into windows
its stuck there - but entering bios works fine

eventually i noticed that bios did not have any boot devices listed anymore (pc has 2 ssd drives ) - cables all fine

cold shut down and restarting the pc will get it to boot into windows just fine - pc works fine again

games work for long hours 10+ without any issues
checkdisk hard disk sentinel report no issues with hard drives installed

analysing crash dumps impossible for now as win10 doesnt dump any even tho it should
dumping is enabled -> kernel memory
and set to not overwrite old dump file
the % progress info showing on the bluescreen kinda doesnt really move and reboot is the better choice

pc stuck in pre bios screen : multiple times
pc crash / bsod on initial boot / sleep wake up : multiple times
pc crash bsod while gaming / high cpu usage : maybe 2 times in 12 month

fix would be great but at the moment id really like to figure out if its hardware issue or just windows being windows

thanks alot in advance :steamthumbsup::lunar2019deadpanpig:

You could check power modes in bios, you can vary it between S0, S1, S3 etc. I think the common setting is S1 maybe yours is not set to that or maybe a different power setting would work for you.

you can google what each setting does.

shut down pc for the night
instead normal boot i started it up in safe mode to see what it would do
safe mode boot worked fine even tho it did NOT let me login using correct password
but it also did NOT crash on login screen
so i restarted one more time
i was able to login fine
but shortly after PC froze up again (music running + circle rotating near mouse curser )

restarted again
and im back in windows :lunar2019deadpanpig:

couldnt find anything related to power modes in my bios

:lunar2019deadpanpig:

(left pc in sleep mode overnight - booted wake-up all fine - manually restarted pc from login screen and once back in windows -> full system freeze -> hard shut down -> reboot -> all fine again )

before i shut down PC for the night this time

i restarted PC -> gone into bios and fully shut down pc from there (power button press )
to test if PC would boot up fine in the morning without freezing

huzzah !

im in windows without crashing on login screen after initial boot ( first time in a while )
ill test this again and see if this would be a work-around to avoid the crashes

left a bit confused considering as to why PC needs power to be gone to boot OK without crash after the night

like is there some data retained in the hardware space that is confusing the Windows when its booting and then makes it puke/bsod ?

thanks you :steamthumbsup::lunar2019deadpanpig:

Windows does not shut down by default and some machines seem to have issues with the hibernation file it creates resulting in failed restarts, (seems to be related to ssd's maybe certain brands don't play well). Mine does but its rare for me.

Turning off fast start supposedly disables this feature but I think it gets overridden by the power options settings.

In control Panel under power choose what the power buttons do, shutdown is probably already selected but if you click change settings that are greyed out you can uncheck the box that puts the computer into sleep. That will stop those options from overriding the machine shutdown.

are you saying that because i have sleep mode showing in my power menu (checkbox ticked)
it will force windows into a fake shut-down sleep state instead of actually shutting down when i specifically choose the option to "shut down" ?

should i untick the checkbox and remove sleep mode from power menu ?

shut-down is selected for power button that is correct
( sleep button set to sleep but i dont think i have that button )

2 differences i noticed

when i choose shut-down option in windows, there is a small blue blinking light on my PC top
when light is on im still able to wake up pc and get it to boot by pressing ctrl + esc key ( as set in bios )

when i press power button for few sec and PC powers down that blue light is NOT blinking and the only way to power on the PC is via its power button

In control panel power options / choose what power button does / click "change settings that are unavailable" and clear the sleep checkbox / save changes.

I do not know for sure but i think it overrides the shutdown and makes it sleep if that box is not cleared. Basically what you want to do is not have the machine sleeping, ever. With ssd drives there is no time saving because they boot so quickly so sleep is really not needed on a desktop pc.

done ! sleep mode tickbox removed

ill keep an eye on the blue light when shutting down
otherwise i dont know of any other indicator telling me the PC is fully OFF (?!)
to ensure a fine boot and no freeze

With my own machine I have sleep disabled in power saving etc so mine never sleeps. but despite that it still screws up sometimes, maybe once every couple of months i have to turn psu switch off/on on my machine to get a full boot up and recover it.

Also, the hibernation file can be around 10gb on the c drive. if you google disable win 10 hibernation there is a powershell cmd to do it and it will reclaim that back to free space.

do you think that my PC is still in some kind of sleep/hibernation mode indicated with the light blinking ? light is fully lit (no blinky) right now when PC is running/in use

assuming the light should be off and PC should be in a full shut-down state when i tell windows to shut down yes ? as in - windows should usually do that if not otherwise told to keep PC in sleep/hybernation/ready-to-wake-up state ?

ty lots for info and insights carlsberg :lunar2019deadpanpig:

Did you ever try a new cmos battery with a fresh cmos reset? I remember now having a pc that produced strange boot behavior and it was my battery.

pc was off for few hours - booted fine
but eventually crashed and rebooted by itself after some hours of idle
im assuming it was a bsod
during boot it was unable to find boot drive and sat in bios screen when i noticed

pc booted fine into windows after i forced it off by power button press

one thing i noticed after disabling the hibernate thing - the blue light on the PC top was not blinking when pc was shut off ( it usually blinks )
i thought it was fully powered off this time :lunar2019deadpanpig:

to check if it's Windows, download a Linux live iso and put it on a usb drive or something and use it for a while, try doing anything you can to stress it out also.
