Ram not on optimized modules
Hello!

So I recently purchased another 8 gb of ram to add onto my current stick of 8gb.
My ram is orientated as such:
DIMMA1
DIMMA2
DIMMB1
DIMMB2

Well I attempted to install the new ram into the designated position from the manual. It says to always start with DIMMA2(which is where the original ram was installed) & new ram should go into DIMMAB2. I tried this and got a black screen & I even tried switching their positions. I still get a black screen.

So I figured that B2 is probably a dead module or the new ram is faulty. I decided to put the ram into A1 & B1 to test that & it worked! BIOS recognizes 16gb now, but upon startup I get a message that states the ram isn’t in the optimized drives & to switch to A2/B2. However, it does give me the option to select “don’t remind me again” and I checked with CPU-Z & the ram is running in dual channel mode.

Does anyone know if I can mess anything up by having the ram not in the optimized modules?

Probably one of your RAM slot of the motherboard is damaged, that's why you got the black-screen when you inserted the RAM in it.

Not sure about A1, B2, etc. But you should always install the RAM sticks in the alternate-slots. Example, If you install your 1st RAM stick in the slot 1 of the motherboard, then install another stick into slot 3. Same applies for slot 2 & 4.

start with the same colored slots farthest from the cpu socket

That is what I have done. Mine are in the 1st & 3rd slot.

As I stated before, the PC tells me the optimum models are the 2nd and 4th slot. Even though the 4th slot wouldn’t work.

I just want to know if I’ll receive performance degradation or anything else by not having them in the “optimum” slot as the PC & manual suggest.

Everything is working fine & the memory is being used & on dual channel. It would seem it’s just as good as the other slots.

Yes I know this. This is not my question.

The 4th slot(which is black) doesn’t work but the other black slot does. So I’ve installed them both on the remaining white slots.

If you installed the RAM sticks in slot 1 & 3 and are working fine. There will be no performance degradation. The PC is probably giving false-alarm because of faulty RAM slot detection.

if a slot does not work, it may be a damaged dimm slot or cpu socket (bent pin/s)

if its working in dual ch mode its fine

If slot 4 is dead, RMA the Motherboard otherwise just use slots 1 & 3 and it'll work all the same. Then enter the bios and enable xmp mode for your dram
