Razer Kragen X headset won't use microphone
Hello, i have a Soundblaster Audigy 5/Rx and i am trying to get the microphone working with my soundcard.
I tried so many configurations and was plugging in directly in the soundcard but nothing seems to work. If i try the "What you hear" i hear only an annoying testing sound.
I think now, that the headsets microphone is actually broken. It can not be that hard to make the microphone working?

I am running Windows 10 and all drivers are updated.

Yes, default.
I checked with a Plantronic USB headset that i have for work. That works fine. Just not that Razer headset. Very disappointing.
Conclusion. Not the soundcard but the headset. (my guess)

If you can, return the headset, Razer headsets are garbage.

I say that as a Razer fanboy, buy something better.
You can get a great mic with an arm for 35-50 pound, and a proper headset for 40-120 pound, that way you'll get better use from your sound card than from Razers ♥♥♥♥ headphones and absolutely garbage mic.

In my opinion all that razer stuff is just a hyped up over priced junk , the mouse i had in particular was very uncomfortable on the hand ,

Well, since i never tested the freaking headset, i can not return it anymore. Lesson learned.
I will just get an inexpensive Logitech headset. Money is tight right now.

Seems to be a common problems win 10 might be caused by updates? Keep coming across mics on headset/mic combos having trouble. Maybe see if the amazon review/questions section has any info or use forums search functions?

It's not really over hyped, it does what it says, even if people dont feel it, and people often allow marketing to control their emotions.

It is overpriced, not so much their more recent products, but their older hardware was.

You had one mouse, probably bought after little research into the topic, not something you can base anything on.

Logitech headsets are quite poor too. Only good one I know of is the G-Pro headset.
That costs a bit more than I would willingly pay.

Honestly, if money is tight, save it a bit more, use some ear buds, or old headphones.
I'm in the same situation myself, I need a new set of headphones, just don't have the money to buy anything decent.
My current ones, HyperX Cloud IIs, lovely, 6 or so years old now, extremely worn out, still play sound, so I gotta stick with them.

If you buy something good, you will spend less money in the long run. A good pair of headphones should last you 5-10years. Especially if it has replaceable parts.

Well, that is probably correct.
To be well honest. I bought this headset because i needed one. But i did not try to use the mic since i assumed it would work.
The sound quality is ok. Not great but ok.
Things like headset should just work and not requiring me to change settings. It just need to take the setting that is in place.
I read somewhere that there are some problems with mics, though not sure what the solution was. Make me somewhat tired to figure that out.
Probably have to research what headset is actually good. I am not a heavy gamer, but like music. So sound quality is important. At the same time i not really willing to spend a lot of money on it. Support is of course something i will pay for.
So let the research begin. :)

If you need a mic for short term, you can pick up a lapel mic or something similar for 5 pounds, should provide the same level of quality as the Razer one would, and could sound better with some EQ.

You don't really need a good headset for gaming, but if you enjoy music, you can enjoy it even more with a good set of headphones.
I can recommend the DT990s, everyone that I've spoken to that owns them loves them, and you can't really go wrong, except if you get a pair that has high resistance, not that resistance effects sound quality much anyway.
I can say to avoid AKG K240 (/ MK IIs) as I recently purchased (and promptly returned) a pair, they provide basically no bass, making voices sound somewhat muffled, lack of bass on tracks is horrible, but it did make mids and highs sound nice, the design is comfortable though, which is a shame. They're not good.

Well, that model runs for $150 here. Reasonable. (Beyerdynamic)

Yes, for games i do not care to much.

Though i found out that my current one actual had a Y-adapter cable which i do not have. Not sure if that was even in the box. I am kind of 80% sure it wasn't.
Anyway, i will get me a Y-cable cable and see if i get it work. That would be really sad for. All the time i really was trying to solve that and its a Y-cable cable. Man.

Anyway, thanks everyone for suggestions and help. I do appreciate it.

You tried to plug the 4 pole connection into a standard 3 pole audio jack?

I can see how you could make the mistake, but I would imagine any decent sound card would have a port for it...

When Win10 updates over time, users need to go and update all their Drivers for everything; this is a given that you must do this over time.

What connection does this Razer headset use?
2x 3 pole 3.5mm jacks?
1x 4 pole 3.5mm jack?
USB?
ButterZ 24. maj 2021 kl. 19:21
I did not notice that. But you are right. The headset has 3 rings, normally i think its two.
This headsets needs a dedicated cable for the mic.
The soundcard, from the manual, does not talk about the cables. So i have to assume these are standard connections. But there are two separate mic inputs.
I further assume that it will be hard to get this y-cable since it is special and not standard. I rather get a different headset in that case.
My computer front has also two separate in/outputs. One for headset and one for mic.
I will have to check with Razer if they are kind enough to send me that cable. Out of good will. Probably not.

Anyway, i am glad i found out what was the reason and thanks pointing the connector out. I would have never noticed.

It has three rings. If that answers your question.
Like i mentioned, USB works fine for mic. I tested that. But on the analog side, since the headset has three rings, it probably need a separate input for the mic.

But USB = its not using your Addon Sound Card, which is most likely what you want as a card such as Sound Blaster would have many more options, controls, equalizer; etc.

3 rings on the connection = 4 pole connection. This means the Headphones + Mic is all through a single 3.5mm jack connection. Desktop PCs can't use this without a proper adapter. 4pole design is meant for Mobile Devices, and many newer Laptops also have this connection type. While a 4pole 3.5mm jack fits any 3.5mm jack device, if the device does not support a 4pole, what will happen is only the Headphones part is usable; again without an adapter to split the Headphones & Mic into 2x jacks for when using a Desktop PC; or a Laptop that also has 2x jacks (one for input and one for output)
