I've heard good and bad things about Straight Talk. They're run by Verizon and Walmart, which should raise red flags. They might be worth a try, but certainly read all the small print.
Very few issues with them.
I have used others due to trying others for my work phone, they all suk IMHO.
Verizon has the better service, signal and coverage in USA, hands down.
However their plans aren't cheap, but at least they have unlimited plans now.
On their 4G LTE in MD, DC, PA, VA; I often get 20-50mbps download speeds.
Local phone? WTF does that even mean?
But I would check out Mint Mobile. They use the T-Mobile network and have unlimited 5g and 4g LTE plans for $30 a month.
Mint sounds just like MetroPCS which also uses the T-Mobile towers; however Metro is horrible and they are not directly linked to T-Mobile in the Corporate sense. And Metro stores have their own ownership franchise, it's not a large scale corporation type. Companies like Metro and Boost are VERY sketchy and always screwing up peoples money and accounts from alot of what I've heard from their customers over the years. Many say Metro was more reliable before they jumped onto the T-Mobile towers. Many co-workers of mine use Metro and they always have tons of complaints, but say Verizon is too expensive. Well if $80/month unlimited from Verizon compared to $50 unlimited from Metro means I get very good service and reliable network; and very high download speeds, to me it's worth it. Who wants to pay for crap. And on Metro and Boost, as soon as reach approx 35-40GB of data used in a month (very easy to do) they throttle you hard until the next billing cycle starts. So hard that you can barely buffer YouTube stuff, let alone do your Google Play Updates.

If it works, good. If not you'll know Verizon or AT&T would be better options.
