i5-6600K Overclock;
Sup guys! I just purchased a used PC just to play a bit of DayZ really. It has older components, including an i5-6600K and a EVGA Titan. I have little to no clue about overclocking... I never asked if the CPU had already been overclocked. So running CPU-Z, the core speed is showing 3916.19MHz, though it keeps going up and down a touch. As I know the CPU runs at 3.5GHz when it's not in Boost mode, does that means it's already overclocked to 3.9GHz?

Cheers in advance!

So the board can OC.

Cooler should be OK for some OC'ing.

OC'ing requires a lot of small changes and testing. Others would be able to give you more detailed OC'ing advice. I tend to stick to simple and leave it at that.

If you end up using Prime95 Stick to version 26.6 or earlier. If you do use a later version be sure to adjust AVX offset in bios to -100Mhz or -200Mhz or it'll heat up really quick.

I'd also suggest backing up your system as OC'ing will cause crashes while you figure out what OC the system can handle and that can cause corruption that may or may not be repairable.

Hopefully others will get into it more if you're interested in knowing more. Time for me to shoot plus plenty more here that are more knowledgable and experienced than me.

The 6600k boosts upto 3.9Ghz so 3916Mhz sounds normal so it's not currently overclocked.

If I remember correctly you'd need a Z170 motherboard if you want to Overclock that CPU.

If you have a capable board I'd see what temps are like with it being overclocked as if they are already quite high you'll need a better cooler first.

Ahh, I see! I have a Maximus VIII Gene mobo and it does have a Deepcool CPU cooler of some sort. After running around Dayz for 15 minutes on High settings at 3440x1440 resolution the temp didn't go much above 45.

Appreciate the reply mate.
OC will only do so much. If a game uses more than 4 threads or you run out of threads because of background processes, it won't help much.

Thanks again the for advice! I'm a bit hesitant as I've got no real need for an overclock other than it seems a bit of a shame to have a K and not try to get a bit more out of it. I'll watch one or two videos and then see if I'm feeling brave enough to give it an attempt haha. Be safe!
overclock.net has good guides
I've done an overclock of 4.2GHz that seems stable at the moment. I know some people can overclock this CPU to 4.6 and beyond but for the time being I'm happy enough with it as long as it gives me a bit more performance. Appreciate the comments!
what cooler are you using?

it should be able to hit close to 4.5 with a 212evo on stock voltage

post a cpuz validation link
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
cpuz -> validate button -> submit button
it will open a browser, copy the url (address) and paste it here

the fsb should be close to 100 (100.2 - 99.8 is good) higher = unstable, lower = bring it up in bios by .1 steps to get it closer to 100

disable turbo and c states in bios to force it to stay at the multi you set
*(will still thermal and vrm throttle)

I've got an OC profile for my 7700k saved in my bios. Been there for over a year and I've yet to use it. It's nice to know I can use it for a little performance gain when my system starts to struggle with things. Until then there isn't a real reason for me to use it when it copes fine with everything I run on it.

Some people may say why own a K cpu and not OC and that's just silly. It's not though. A K cpu has higher clocks than the non K variant so paying that little extra gives you a boost without needing to OC. It's no different to buying any other CPU that has higher clocks than another cpu.

You have the option to OC or not. Even if you don't now you have the ability to do so at any point in the future without needing new hardware. Possibly a better cooler depending on how for you push and how could the CPU is.
