Changing monitor refresh rate has a negative colour effect. Any way to fix this?
My monitors normal refresh rate is 75hz. At the time I figured higher refresh rate just meant better. Thing is now the only way games actually look smooth is when they are running at 75fps, and for some games that's really tricky to do, but I can run those games smoothly at 60 and often there's a 60fps cap of course. I did discover that you can use the display adaptor properties to change your monitors refresh rate to anything you like, so I set it to 60hz and it works, games capped at 60 look smooth as butter now, however, when I make the change it crates this odd looking grey colourless effect. The colours are still there but they look very muted and kind of, saturated maybe? I'm not sure what the right word is. Is this just a side effect of changing the refresh rate one has to live with or am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

Changing refresh rate shouldn't affect colour. I've had several monitors over the years from 60hz to 144hz and not one has had visual changes other that refresh rate. Could be a montior fault, driver issue or something. Though for something to lower in quality like that it'd make more sense for it to happen when raising not lowering something.

Take a photo of it at each refresh and upload it somewhere. Then link the image here so users can see the effects you're trying to describe.
i would just disable v-sync and be happy with the max framrate. the monitor's refreshrate is just no problem then anymore imho, though a 144hz compared tio a 60 hz monitor is better. you could play around with v-sync or adaptive v-sync with your 75 hz monitor, but i think the best gaming is max frames per second. for example it is good to have 300 fps stable with cs:go. it may depend on the user...i prefer max fps gaming.

Tried taking pictures but honestly the camera simply doesn't capture the difference in colour.

The best way is at your refresh rate (if you have G-/Freesync) or higher than your refresh rate, but using an FPS limiter (like RTSS) to limit it to a value that won't fluctuate (if using no sync.)
This will reduce latency (lower than 300 fps in a lot of games, even if you use a 144-165 fps cap), and it improves muscle memory because the frames are placed evenly, meaning it's always the same update time, leading to more accurate and reliable results.
And an FPS limit keeps GPU usage down which would act like a buffer for any hard-to-process frames, which should keep frame drops from happening. (And lowers latency too.)

Plus, you can feel the FPS fluctuating when its uncapped, and it feels terrible, I cant play like that unless it's like 500-1000fps. (2-1ms frametimes.)

I've read of people that have turned their monitors refresh rate up and experienced this, but not the other way around.

I would check to make sure that you've got the colour, and other settings the same.
All I noticed when changing from 60hz to 144hz was it just got brighter.

I thought it might just be brightness as well, and it does look like a change in brightness. But I tried changing the brightness setting on my monitor and no matter what I changed it too the washed out colourless effect didn't go away.
That's normal.

There may be buttons on the screen to enhance the colour. You can use colour calibration, as well, by using software for it. Which generally is already installed on your system. It's probably findable in some configuration menu or control panel. (depending on your operating system)
Sometimes it can also be done, by using software that came with your graphics card.

you can calibrate your monitor with the cmd:

dccw.exe

if this doesnt help, i dont know what can...just to mention
or the display may have osd profiles for res/refresh

check its settings
If you're using Nvidia,
In the Nvidia Control Panel
Go to Display - Change resolution
select (3) Nvidia color settings
change Output Dynamic Range to 'Full'
That should help. Just had the same issue when playing Elden Ring (capped at 60fps) and it automatically made the colors mooted

This worked for me. Was having the exact same issue with Elden ring.

Thanx my man, i long time try to found this!
if the monitor does backlight strobing, it will get dimmer with higher refresh rate

check for a setting like that and disable it

A million thanks! I recently reinstalled my OS and didn't bother to look at the nVidia settings in the control panel. I previously played The Saboteur, which has no problem with my native refresh rate (75Hz), but since the game is capped at 60Hz, I noticed that if I set the refresh rate to 60 in the game's config file, it runs much smoother than on 75Hz.

The only problem was that when I switched to 60Hz, my monitor made the image brighter (colours stayed the same, only with less contrast, so to speak). My monitor is an ASUS VG245HE. Now everything is perfect! Thank you again!
