will an external nvme slot work for egpu?
so i have a gaming laptop and im looking to get an external gpu, but it requires an nvme slot to it which is currently used by m2, will a external nvme through usb work?

I am looking to upgrade my 1050 ti mobile to 1660 super and my proccessor is i5 8300h, im aware that there will be a slight bottleneck and im planning to buy a power supply, case and the graphics card so then i could build a pc and give this computer to my mother.

Yes you can use an M.2 NVMe slot to connect a graphics card. It won't be fast though since it's only x4.

Dont bother going that route.
What is the exact Laptop model so we can see if it supports eGPU via USB 3.1/3.2 Type-C

Acer nitro 5. an515-52-50vr
Ok on that Laptop your only option is using an M2 adapter. As your Laptop only has USB 3.1 Gen1 as the fastest USB, which is not fast enough.

However if you were using an M2 NVME SSD you will need to resort to using a 2.5 inch SATA SSD so you can use full X4 Lanes from the M2 NVME Slot for your eGPU adapter.

This explains it all as far as your laptop goes.

thanks!
IDK why a 1660 GPU though... you should be able to find a used RTX 2070 Super or 2080 Super for cheap.
It's old topic but I'll say why not 2080 .
As Omega said x4 lanes is slow and it won't utilize 2080 at all ,not even sure if it will make 1660 worth getting into it.

I have laptop with GTX1060 and nvme and I'm wondering if it's worth the money to get 1660s and separate power.

Did the creator of the topic try it yet?
Yes but going from a 1060 to a 1660; there won't be much gain there.

While you might loss performance (that's a given in this scenario) with something like 2070 or 2080, at least it's raw performance will be way higher then a 1060 or 1660 of any kind; so it would still be a huge gain to someone with GTX 1060. As even a 1660 would take around a 20% performance hit with only 4 Lanes as well.
