120hz monitor
So, exactly how important is a monitor with a higher refresh rate? If I have a 3000 series GPU that will do UHD and I have a true 4K monitor, will a 60hz monitor still look amazing or is the 120/144hz monitor necessay?

If you play alot of FPS,( first person shooter) games then the refresh rate count. If not then 60 Hz is good for for your 4K screen.

I would go as far as to say

144hz minimum should be priority before resolution/monitor type.-

I use 1440p, 144 hz (can 165hz oc) IPS. I would never change that for a 4k 60 hz, infact I rather have a good 144hz 1080p IPS, than a 60 hz 4k VA monitor.. but well.. a matter of bias I guess..

You can see a significant different from 60-144 hz, like a huge difference and not just in fast paced FPS games.

Which gpu exactly? A 3090 will push high fps at 4k, a 3080 and below will be a bit lacking.

It's important for most games because going from 60Hz to 120Hz or higher has a very noticeable increase in the fluidity; games that support framerates that high run a lot smoother when they do, and it's easier on the eyes than 60Hz.

Very important, especially for games. Developers can actually make your games go faster, if you have higher refresh rates. So you can run and turn faster, without being unable to see what happens at higher speeds, and losing sight of the environments or whatever you are looking at, and moving objects gain increased detail or can show improved animations, because of being able to display more animation frames.
The graphics will look more realistic.

I played 1080p 60hz LCD's for years and they're serviceable. Anything over 60hz is nice. 100/120hz/144hz would all be good.

I'm running 1440p and 144hz now. And 1440p is nice, looks great. And 144hz is great too. If I had to pick one... it's a tough choice. Some games are bound to look amazing at 4k or 1440p. Some games are bound to feel amazing at 144hz. You can learn to live with either I'm sure.

I ran 1080/60hz ( 100+FPS) at ultra always.

Then upgraded monitor to 3440x1440 and played at 60fps/hz ultra and was happy.

But then I downgraded settings to low/med and played at 3440x1440/144 and omg! Despite much lower graphics settings 1440/144 more than makes up for lower quality settings.

Initially, I felt higher res was better than higher gps/hz but after 6 months.., the refresh rate is better higher res.

Fwiw,I played world of tanks mostly which isn’t as demanding as say csgo.

IMO, increase res and FPS/hz is great even if it means bottoming out quality settings.

Most people also sit close to the monitor, so a 1440p 27" - 32" is pretty much the sweetspot atm if it runs 144hz or more.

Yeah, to give context... it’s a 34” 1440p ultra wide and my eyes are about 700mm from the screen.

First of all if your screen is smaller than 37 inch you won't notice a difference between 1440p and 4k so consider that.

Second is that if you play recent games you won't achieve high FPS on 4k. I play recent games and 3080 cannot hit 144fps at 1440p max details.

Hz won't affect looks but smoothness of the game, for today sweet spot is 1440p 144hz but as you buy pc now I would rather invest in 4k 120/144hz. Even if you won't benefit from it now, once you upgrade gpu in two years time,GPUs should be capable of 4k high refresh rate gaming.

Obviously I'm talking here about new games max details. If you play older titles you might achieve 100+FPS at 4k now.

30 fps era is almost over.
Now it is time for 60 or above.

You can -- viewing distance and persons eyes matter too -- why shouldn't you want higher PPI? Just look at phones, they have 300-500+ PPI now, and people say they can see a difference there, the example you're giving is less than half the minimum PPI for a modern phone.....
You can see a difference between them, to say you can't is nieve and misinformed.

I personally use a 1440p display that's 23.8inch, I sit at arms length, and have very poor eye sight, I can still see pixels, depending on focus and area. Ideally you want to not be able to see them, that's only realistically possible at 150-200 PPI for a desktop. You want for the pixels to be as small as possible.

People always said 24 inch was to small for 1440p, in regards to PPI, I think it's still to high.

Smaller denser pixels can make images look much nicer, they will look more natural, clear, and won't strain your eyes (because you're not focusing on cubes, you're focusing on the picture.)

Refresh rate is the most important thing, in my opinion. I would rather have a 2K 144Hz monitor than a 4K 60Hz monitor.

To my eyes, the most important step is from 60Hz to 90Hz. That makes a huge difference. 4K is all pretty and stuff but it's still pretty difficult to drive even with the latest video cards. Personally I would avoid a 4K monitor at this stage... but it also depends on what games you play.

2k is 1920x1080p.

I agree, refresh rate is more important than most of the other stuff, but you can get a better (higher resolution) monitor for not much more. iirc, 1440p displays are about ~300 quid now. Not much more than your average 1080p 'gaming' monitor.

60 to 90hz is a decent jump, and instantly apparent, past 100hz, it does seem to depend on the person, if they can actually notice a difference between them. I think it's absolutely worth going 144hz though, even if you can't feel higher than 120hz, or even 100hz. (Mainly because 144hz displays are just cheaper than 100 or 120hz, from what I've seen.)

Okay so what do you guys think of a monitor that has "Freesynch'?
