GTX 1660 Ti good?

It can do pretty much anything at 60 fps high settings 1080p, couple of years old stuff maxed out. If you have 144 Hz monitor then would look for something more powerful like RTX 3060.

I had someone tell that I don't need consistent 140+ fps to get benefits from a 144hz monitor. is that true?

if the display supports freesync/gsync, it will always look the best it can
using vsync you will get small stuttering when not holding 144+fps (showing duplicate frames)

Okay, so when shopping i should look for one with freesync or gsync, or both?

No thats not true with my R5 3600 and 1660ti on Valheim on high setting im getting fps drops to mid 40s sometimes. And thats an indie game.

It'll look good as long as you don't constantly drop below 60 FPS, because below 50% of the refresh rate you can get a really choppy looking experience

Valheim is just poorly optimized, at least that's what i've heard.

I think we know, but maybe they should start optimizing their game, i see a ton of people complaining about low fps in bases.
