Over around 4 years I have opened it up maybe twice a year to clean and there is pretty much no dust inside. occasionally vacuum / wash the outer mesh when it looks dusty.
Grill would prevent cable knocking against the fan if you have it mounted facing out, but isn't necessary.
edit was thinking of the wire grill
thats like nylon grills, only useful in very dusty areas, and would need to be cleaned often
Looks like it would block a lot of airflow - might be better to look for something like what is used on PSU fans. If it's blowing from inside the case to outside, you wouldn't really need a filter - you want dust to not get inside in the first place, but if it does get in then it's better to let it get out as well
You want as little restrictions as possible when it comes to any airflow towards or away from your fans. Putting grilles onto fans can also create turbulence, vibrations and noise.
Yeah I was thinking wire grills to stop stuff hitting the fans too, not individual dust filters, those things look like a pain to keep clean abd that they would seriously hamper airflow.
Honestly, if your case is old/basic enough to not have removable filters, perhaps its time gir a new case? They don't cost much these days.
