What is the "Crysis" of this generation of games?
PC gamers who played from 2005 to 2010 will probably remember the frequent "Can it run Crysis?" comments whenever new graphics cards came out, as the game Crysis pushed the boundaries of graphics for its time in particularly impressive ways and motivated generations of people to upgrade their graphics cards.

Is there any similar game today that pushes the boundaries of PC hardware and graphics to the same degree? If so, what?

It will do eventually, there's a single player campaign and the mmo being developed side by side.

Star Citizen looks like exactly the type of game I'd like to play, but it doesn't seem smart to buy if the single player isn't complete yet. For all I know, they might never finish it. Or they might finish it 10 years from now -- at which point I'll presumably be wanting to play other things anyway.

Admittedly I own a few ships in it, but I play very sporadically so as not yo burn out a couple years before its release, you can easily play it with just the starter package.

The mmo part us at a point now where it has proper game loops and can be fascinating to explore, but, it is still fairly early and needs a good 2-3 years still, but they have created a whole lot of new tech and pretty much an fane engine at this point so progress is speeding up gradually.

The single player is going to be in 3 parts, part one has all the actors dialogue recorded and is I think about 2/3 through its progress so far, but as everything is used in both story and mmo parts, they have had to develop the tech before they can move on with some parts.

The best option if you are interested is to make an account (use my referral code for 5k ingame if you do buy it hehe) code is STAR-4DWP-HYTC

Then wait for a free fly week, they happen periodically throughout the year where you can play for free and they often have discounts on the starting packages.

You can buy the single player and mmo separately or together at this time if you like it.
