GPU not fully utilized @ 1440p
Hello all. From the advice of the people here I went with a Samsung Odyssey G7 to replace a cheapo 4k monitor and it's been an improvement in every way. Just the mouse on the desktop is incomparably better at 240Hz from 60Hz. Before at 4k, my 3080 was always busy but now it seems to be slacking a bit. I can say that it's not a CPU bottleneck since CPU usage is always happy below 50%. 32gb DDR4 RAM at 3200MHz shouldn't be an issue too. The GPU isn't being throttled from temperature either. Any advice is appreciated since this little issue is keeping me from being a bit closer to that 240 FPS to take advantage of the refresh rate. Cheers.

It's literally your cpu.

The games you are playing are likely not using all the cores and the cpu itself isn't fast enough, based on the info given.

Depending on the cpu and game, your ram is also holding it back.

What cpu do you have, is it overclocked?

i7 11700k, not overclocked. i also don't see how it could be the ram when it's never been brought anywhere close to full usage by a game

OK, wasn't expecting an 11700k tbh, was expecting an older ryzen.

What games and settings are you running and at what fps, also, what is your gpu utilisation?

As it's a fast cpu (albeit with issues, I hope you need the pcie4 atleast) you might be at the limit of the gpu at the settings, or, could still be a game not making full use of the cpu, 50% could be 4 cores at 100% load.

An overclock could help, and it's the rams speed that is an issue, on a build like that, which I'm hoping us on a z590 board, should be running atleast 4000MHz + memory.

I've only played on Mordhau and BF1 since getting it since they're the only games I really play. BF1 usually sits around 170-180 but if for example I go prone in a ditch, the GPU usage will increase and I'll get up to the 240 FPS cap. In Mordhau it's a bit more variable but about 160-180 maybe. Unsure there because I wasn't paying attention much.

It is a Z590 motherboard, yes. What you said about the RAM makes sense. Shame that 4000MHz is so expensive.
NVidia Control Panel -> Manage 3D settings ->Power management mode . Might try Prefer maximum performance . Hope it ll help even in 2D .

This should be common sense now for any gamer. It's always been this way where the user should change it to Prefer Max Performance after a driver install/update.

However I wouldn't expect a 3080 to get pegged much above 70-80% usage @ 1440p; regardless of refresh rate or game settings. And that is fine also, nothing wrong there.

When you go with a high end enough GPU, it by design has enough headroom for higher resolutions and thus high usage needs. It's not going to get fully pegged when using a res like 1080p or 1440p; as such as GPU would pull that off with ease and still have room to breathe. Some game engines also have a poor design and as a result may peg the GPU @ 99% pretty much no matter what; which IS NOT normal.
Your cpu is 8c/16t, you will never see 100% utilization in games. You are getting almost 200 fps, that's all that matters. If you want 100% utilization of your GPU, play at 4k or use DSR.
Not using all of your GPU is fine, so long as you're getting a good framerate. If you're not using 95%+ of your GPU, you are bottlenecking, and since you have the specs you do, not much you can do to change that.

Enable G-sync or Freesync, and enjoy.

And I should add, <95% usage is a good thing, because it reduces latency, helps keep frametimes smoother, and helps prevent large framedrops. So don't worry to much.

did you try reinstalling windows??
what's weird is that even when I played a round of csgo last night i wasn't hitting the 240 fps cap because things weren't being fully utilised there either. i don't see any reason why i shouldn't get more in something like csgo
Just played some Mordhau again and fps was under 100 because gpu only being utilised less than 60%. don't know what's going on. got more fps at 4k
Please try a clean GPU driver wipe with DDU + disable Windows auto driver install feature + clean install an older NVIDIA driver without GFE being picked during install; such as 466.11

Hi, thanks for the response. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have fixed it.

Here in ESO the usage drops below 50%. I've even seen the fps dip to 40. Really not sure what's going on. https://i.imgur.com/kkTyvxX.png

Your cpu is boosting / overclocked right? It isn't stuck at a really low speed some how?

The gpu does have all its power fully connected, not daisy chained and you have tried removing and reseating it, just incase right?

If not, do that now, if there is still no progress, I'm afraid I'd be reaching for my windows USB to fo a fresh install.
Yeah CPU is fine and boosts up to 5 GHz and the GPU is plugged in properly (3x8). Had no problems sitting at 99% for hours without budging at 4k too.
