What is an ideal CPU temperature?

Whats the go to temperatures for users to aim for?

50 °C to 70 °C (60 °C to 90 °C for overclock) would be ideal. If there is a values from the "Absolute Maximum Rating" Beware context, it mean it was stressed to the limit during the testing.

Rather than guesses and walls of text; lookup your CPU model, find the manufacturers recommended max temp, keep it about 10C or lower than the max temp. Some cpu models/generations have very low max temps, others have extremely high max temps.

"Ideal" is simply not overheating and not too warm compared to your CPUs max temp. 55C on a 90C max temp cpu as an example, could be seen as ideal or 60-65C if aircooled for a 90C CPU.

Start learning to lookup your parts and see their max rated / ideal temps.

Incorrect. For Intel processors anything between 0c and 100c is perfectly fine. For modern AMD processors it's 0c and 95c.

For any kind of gamer PC that will be under heavy loads (or professional work station) get Water Cooling, sure, sounds scary, but systems functioning on water cooling have been around for more than a decade. Fans are rated for CFM not "quiet" or low rpms, hyped fans of low CFM are the worst performers. A fan cooled CPU is only good for light work and office tasks, if you want it to last a good 8+ years.

Here is how you achieve the lowest possible temps:
1) Set your CPU fans in Bios to run 100% at 60C & at 50% at 40C.
2) Have the case setup where you have a good airflow, regardless of configuration.
3) High CFM case fans that move air not idle dead. Set case fans like CPU fans.

30-50C is a pretty ideal idle temp to be efficient and safe long term, but most chips can handle like 95-100c fine.

You shouldn't "aim" for any specific value, so to speak. There is no actual norms as it will vary based on way too many factors. Unless you have an identical setup to someone in identical conditions (same environment), you CAN NOT compare.

The general rule is "the cooler, the better" and this is pretty much absolute. Heat is the number one risk factor for most PC electronic parts. Some parts actually have some evidence suggesting warmer (to a point only, not absolutely) is better, such as mechanical HDDs, but for CPUs, 40C would be better than 45C, just as 60C would be better than 70C, and so on, for example. But that doesn't mean 70C is bad (more the opposite; that's pretty cool for a modern CPU under heavy load) or that there's some figure to "aim for".

Forget idle temperatures, they are almost entirely meaningless. If your idle is REALLY high, it's a symptom of a pretty big issue, but otherwise it's almost meaningless in and of itself.

Temperatures under load will always be higher, so concern yourself with your ceiling instead.

Modern CPUs also boost higher, and hold it for longer, if temperatures are lower, but boosting less because it's warmer isn't the same as "throttling". As someone else noted, modern CPUs for a long while have had a maximum limit (#PROCHOT status) of upwards near ~100C; 95C for current Ryzen and it's a bit variable depending on exact Intel CPU but it's usually around or a little above that. If there's anything to "aim for", it's no specific value, but generally "below throttle". Since throttle should be treated as not ideal/near danger (since the chip IS scaling back to prevent damage), I'd say a small buffer under this is best for your maximum.

Everyone has their own opinion; some are okay even 5 C below this and others think anywhere within 20C of the limit isn't bad and not normal. My own two cents is ~85C (I say around as it's not strict), give or take, on modern CPUs would be a good point to start looking into things if it's going above this by a lot and/or often.

It seems I have to repeat, again: This is false and incorrect information. Intel's processors are completely safe up to 100c with no problems. AMD's current Ryzen processors are safe up to 95c with no problems. No one has to actually maintain 65c or 70c, or anything like that. No one should be concerned with that at all with today's processors. Even if they do reach 95c or 100c they just reduce clocks. No one can possibly damage our computer's processor from heat today.

To anyone that finds this thread: Just go use the computer. Don't worry about temps at all unless the computer is actually shutting it's self off when playing games.

any good chipset should be good up to like 80C 24/7 for decades...

it's nice to idle them at like 30-50... but that's just for w.e and probably TBH the thermal cycling is worse than just letting them sit at 60ish.

my 4070k has been sitting from 40-60c depending on how clean I've kept the cooler for over a decade and it's still rockin... generally I just try to keep em below 80 for good measure, but that's me.
