Multiple games fail to launch on Win 10

I’m having some Steam problems after acquiring a refurbished Dell Precision M6800 laptop running Windows 10 Pro. System specs:

Intel Core i7-4800MQ 2.7 GHz
RAM: 32 GB
Motherboard: Dell 0FSHF3
Intel HD Graphics 4600
NVIDIA Quadro K5000M w/ 4 GB
SSD disks: 1 TB, 2 TB
Laptop screen: 1920x1080

I installed Steam, downloaded Tabletop Simulator and Tell Me Why, and tried to play Tell Me Why. It did its initial installation, the game started, I got an intro screen, went to the main menu, I launched a game, made sure it was working, and fairly quickly quit.

Then I tried to play Tabletop Simulator. It did its initial installation as well. I can play it.

But going back to Tell Me Why, launching the game causes Steam to look like it is doing it, the screen goes black for a fraction of a second, and then I’m back at the starting page and the game has stopped.

Is there any chance Tabletop Simulator did something to my installed drivers, MS Visual C++ Runtime, etc. that broke Tell Me Why?

I also reinstalled Tell Me Why (didn’t fix it), then uninstalled all games and Steam itself, reinstalled Steam, and the games. (Still didn’t fix it.) That’s why I’m wondering if Tell Me Why did something to installed drivers / Visual C++ Runtime.

To make sure it wasn’t just that game, I purchased Chernobylite, downloaded it, and tried to play it. It starts to launch, I see a small logo for a fraction of a second, and it crashes and sends a crash report.

After that, Tell Me Why still silently crashes. Tabletop Sim crashed with an instruction trying to read a bad memory address. Running it again appeared to run an installer, but it crashed. Running it again, it worked.

Some more info:

After Chernobylite installed, I looked around for log files, and saw that it attempted to install DirectX and the Visual C++ 2015 and 2017 runtime. I tried re-running all these installers by hand and both VC++ 2015 and 2017 threw errors. I’m not sure if this is a problem or not. The following is the log pertaining to 2017:

Try some other games. 3 games is not enough to come to any conclusion. There are planty of FREE games in steam that you can download and test.

Event Viewer some times is helpful for troubleshooting Also check in Device manager for not properly installed and deactivated devices .

Games aren't going to run properly on a Quadro gpu. That's for work stuff. Most games don't even know what Quadro is. Not sure why you bought such a laptop that simply isn't for gaming, period.

If you can't even properly install the Visual C Runtimes, the OS is probably screwed up. Do a clean drive wipe and clean install Win10 64bit; either 20H2 or 21H1

I primarily need a laptop for CAD/CAM and engineering applications. Gaming is secondary. I don’t do it enough to justify a dedicated gaming PC.

I feel like an idiot. My friend who set up the laptop for me swore he installed the latest video drivers and I believed him.

Nope.

New video drivers from NVIDIA downloaded and installed. Problem solved. All the games now run.

Quadro won't run games, period.
Only ones that would run are ones not looking for AMD/NVIDIA GPUs.
Like classic indie games.

Quadro was always for CAD and 3D Rendering, not games.

Quadro is also very old, it died many years ago because it was replaced by TITAN and RTX

If simple games have an issue still on the Quadro, you can temporarily disable this GPU, make sure the Intel Chipset INF and Intel HD 4600 GPU Drivers are up to date from Intel's website. Then with the Quadro disabled, games will run using the Intel GPU. However demanding games won't run very well though due to the lack of power that the Intel GPUs prior to the 5th Gen CPUs which have Intel Iris GPUs

Intel HD 4600 is enough to run MineCraft and Roblox though
