wifi? lan? cable/dsl/fiber/sat?
tracert google.com while downloading to see where the bottleneck is
fist hop is the router (or modem+router combo)
next should be modem (or isp if using a modem+router combo)
next few will be isp side
last is google.com
if you get large numbers to the router, its the cable or wifi connection
its connected to a wireless router, thanks for the help bud
Do you actually configure your WiFi adapter device in Windows? The defaults usually sux
ive been thinking about capping it at around 5MB/s, since my usual is a pretty low 13 to 12 to see if that helps,
and how should I configure the wifi adapter device? do you have any recommendations?
WiFi will always be "iffy" at best and most times you will have bad pings and not close to your full ISP speeds.
Everyone in your home all using WiFi at the same time is most likely the issue.
This might require a better quality Router that can properly handle MANY WiFi devices at once.
i suppose its really only affecting me cuz im the one downloading things over 5gb every so often, everyone uses the wifi, but most are asleep when im on playing games and stuff. the router is down the hall, a door down from mine, it shouldnt be as bad as it is, ill pitch getting a new router to everyone soon, thanks for the suggestion. ill also see if i can do anything about ethernet stuff, cuz that sounds worth it.
I've been doing that in my home since like 2010, no problems. Back then when we had 25Mbps. Now we have 1Gbps ISP. 5 PCs, 4 Phones, 2 Game Consoles, 2 Tablets. Even my 2014 backup phone (Galaxy S4) downloads @ 50 MB/s no problem. Streaming 4K content, no such thing as a buffer.
As far as PCs go though, always avoid using the Windows provided WiFi or BT Driver. ID what the device model or chipset is and download + install the driver from the official maker. Then configure the device via Device Manager > Properties. This is something you'd generally only do for a Ethernet or WiFi device though to get to its config settings. Put the Roaming on Aggressive, disable all forms of Power Saving. Set power output to the max.
