Downloading Errors :(
Hey! Whenever I go to download and install one of my games in my library, it oftentimes shuts off my internet entirely, I made sure to check off the “Throttle Internet” thing in my steam settings before I tried installing a large game again, it’s been doing this for a little while and I was hoping to get some recent advice, and not some forum from 8 years ago on gamefaq or smth.
I use an external HDD, and an internal SSD, the same thing happens when I do both. Not sure if it’s an issue with my provider, or with steam in general, any help would be appreciated!

how is the pc connected to the internet?
wifi? lan? cable/dsl/fiber/sat?

tracert google.com while downloading to see where the bottleneck is

fist hop is the router (or modem+router combo)
next should be modem (or isp if using a modem+router combo)
next few will be isp side
last is google.com

if you get large numbers to the router, its the cable or wifi connection

honestly it might be a wifi device driver, but even after an update and a restart, its hard to discern what it is exactly, ill try it again, while also trying the comment above to see if theres a place where it bottlenecks while installing, thanks the two of u!!!!

Have you tried capping the download speed in Steam and see if the issue continues?

Do you actually configure your WiFi adapter device in Windows? The defaults usually sux

ive been thinking about capping it at around 5MB/s, since my usual is a pretty low 13 to 12 to see if that helps,
and how should I configure the wifi adapter device? do you have any recommendations?

Seriously, always run an Ethernet cable if you can help it.
WiFi will always be "iffy" at best and most times you will have bad pings and not close to your full ISP speeds.

How far away is the Router?

Everyone in your home all using WiFi at the same time is most likely the issue.
This might require a better quality Router that can properly handle MANY WiFi devices at once.

i suppose its really only affecting me cuz im the one downloading things over 5gb every so often, everyone uses the wifi, but most are asleep when im on playing games and stuff. the router is down the hall, a door down from mine, it shouldnt be as bad as it is, ill pitch getting a new router to everyone soon, thanks for the suggestion. ill also see if i can do anything about ethernet stuff, cuz that sounds worth it.

With a good router everyone in the home should be able to download 24/7 at full ISP speeds.
I've been doing that in my home since like 2010, no problems. Back then when we had 25Mbps. Now we have 1Gbps ISP. 5 PCs, 4 Phones, 2 Game Consoles, 2 Tablets. Even my 2014 backup phone (Galaxy S4) downloads @ 50 MB/s no problem. Streaming 4K content, no such thing as a buffer.

As far as PCs go though, always avoid using the Windows provided WiFi or BT Driver. ID what the device model or chipset is and download + install the driver from the official maker. Then configure the device via Device Manager > Properties. This is something you'd generally only do for a Ethernet or WiFi device though to get to its config settings. Put the Roaming on Aggressive, disable all forms of Power Saving. Set power output to the max.
