Steam Linux Mint Not Getting Past Login
Hi the other night a game crashed my pc when I was playing it and I had no choice but to do a hard restart. So now I turn the computer back on and open steam again only to find that once I get past the initial log in screen nothing happens. The Steam icon will sit in the task bar and will seemingly (I'm not sure if it's somewhere but the main window doesn't appear) respond to nothing but closing. I tried deleting the steam launcher and .steam folder and putting it back but the same thing happens. Does anyone know what could be going on here?

Open a terminal and run "steam --reset", this will force Steam to reinstall.

Now it's stuck on "Updating Steam Information", I think an update caused this actually now because before reset like you told me to do here an update came for me when I turned it on again last night.

Edit: If I close that out and go through the log in screen nothing happens at all now, the steam icon doesn't even appear in the right corner. Now doing the reset again nothing comes up at all. wtf

Edit again: I reinstalled it completely and did everything again from scratch and now I'm back to the log on information screen then nothing but the icon thing again.

Edit: So turning on auto login also hangs but I get to a screen that says "connecting Steam Account..." and it hangs there.

Using linux mint 17.3 rosa

I was playing a game in proton when this all happened last night, I did look up some of the issue myself and didn't even have some beta anything in the steam folder people are talking about (or at least not since I reinstalled it). I'm stumped.

My GPU is a Nvida GT-730 with driver version 384.130

This was apparently already fixed in the beta

But yeah, mint 17.3 is ancient, update it.

It is a good idea to keep Game Clients opt'ed into the Beta.

Latest Stable Release version of Mint is 20.2, I think i read somewhere that newer Kernels are getting better driver support too.

Kernel version in 20.2 is 5.4
