4th controller

Hey all,

I've this weird bug with a few games. When I try to use four controllers, the fourth one does not work.

It can be any of the 5 controllers I have. It seems to be what order they're detected in.

Most games do not have this problem, e.g. Lovers in a dangerous spacetime, overcooked work fine, but Retimed & Paw paw paw do not.

Any ideas on how to get the fourth one working?

do they show in joy.cpl?

xinput only supports upto 4

dinput/raw can use more
if more than 4 are in joy.cpl, you need to set the game to use dinput or raw instead of xinput
check in the games forum on how to do this

sorry, there was some confusion there. Only every 3 of the 5 controllers work. Never number 4 (or greater)

Your suggestion to look in joy.cpl was great. It has shown me a hint. I've a mystery "2 axis 8 button gamepad" in there. I'm sure thats being picked up as controller 4 in the games. I've no idea what it is though.

I've tried disabling anything remotely related in Device Manager, but it does not disappear. Any bright ideas how I can ID what it is? I'm guessing its some software emulated device.

check the hid list in device manager (tick show hidden devices)
and disable them (not remove as that will just get reinstalled at reboot)

Got it! Removing one of the items I thought wasn't related turned out to be it. A reboot later and I've only got my Xbox controllers, no mystery items any longer.
