You need power dvd or something similar or movies won't play. If you buy a dvd/blue ray player just alone it won't play movies until you install the software.
You basically have two options:
1. buy a player that comes bundled with software for playback
2. buy a player without software and purchase/find software separately (like power dvd)
Cheers

disc media is basically obsolete. unless you wanna watch movies on disc there is no point in getting a disc drive

edit: may have misunderstood you so here's my other answer.

you can watch dvd\bluray on your pc as long as your disc drive supports that media

Not usually no. Most cases don't even come with the bays required for one nowadays as downloading stuff is easier and has most up to date versions.

If you really need a drive there are plenty of external/USB drives you could get. I actually have an old internal dvd/Bluray writer drive that is currently sat in a box under the bed. Do have a USB adapter so I can use it externally though it hasn't been used for over a year.

Depending on your purpose you may not even need software

Get a bluray player if you actually want to watch them.

when I bought my blu-ray/dvd-drive I had NERO software suite bluray-player ... until update of windows / gpu-drivers broke it
then I used free leawo bluray-player .. until another update broke that too.
now I have a ps4 for bluray and pc is for gaming only. not gonna waste any more time or money. also netflix on tv and ps4 ^^

windows 10 also removed dvd-playback function from windows media player so you need app like vlc media player or media player classic for dvds.

odd is only needed if you need it
you can do pretty much anything without it
and other software to backup/play your own discs
but no real need to buy them anymore either since streaming services are free/cheap (vudi/tubi/amazon/netflix/hulu etc...)

vlc or mpc are much better at handling dvd/bd and other media than mpc anyway

i mean you can get a dvd/blue ray players as an usb accessory and download a player like vlc from the internet. I think the ms store version doesn't work, because microsoft trys to sell their own dvd player for 10 or 15 buck. idk
OR you are cool and mod you nintendo wii, so it can play dvd's. (This actually works if you have an original white wii bdw...)
lol
