Laptop reaching 97 degree celsius.
Hello, I have an Omen 15 laptop which has a 1050 and an i5 8300H 2.30ghz. Ive had it for 2 years now and it caused nothing but problems since. Now i have a new problem. After an hour of gaming it gets really hot and reaches 97 degrees C. I dont know what to do to solve it. I use Omen Gaming Hub to monitor the resolution. I play games like Rainbow Six, Rocket League, COD, Subnautica but the laptop gets really hot when i start playing Growtopia... yes Growtopia. It reaches 97 degrees on the other games but not as quick as Growtopia. I am really concerned about my laptop since i cant afford to buy new parts or even a new laptop. Ive tried underclocking or undervolting the CPU (i dont know whats that term it called) but it seems my cpu is not compatible with that. I dont know what to do and would appreciate if you guys have a solution. Thanks

This is not uncommon for laptops. There is very little you can do about it.

Make sure the heatsinks are clean, blow out the laptop with compressed air.

You can get a laptop cooling pad, but it might make little difference.

Laptop cooling pad does make a difference. Plus try not to game as much in warmer weather and maybe reduce graphic settings to reduce gpu workload. Apart from that not much you can do after cleaning it

Depends on the laptop. Some have better cooling potential then others. Fully depends on the design of the cooling.
anrkyuk 2021 年 6 月 26 日 下午 2:22
How well cooling pads work entirely depend on the vents on the underside of the laptop. If the only vent is for the fan, then placing a couple of drinks coasters in each corner to slightly raise the laptop will likely have the same effect on cooling as any pad would.

If the laptop has lots of vents then a pad could make a difference.

I have an old Toshiba S70 with an i7-4700HQ and R5-265x with just a fan vent on the underside and a Coolermaster U3 pad drops cpu temps by just 1c when gaming. I also have an Omen 17" 10750h with an RTX 2070 which has vents covering about half the underside and the same pad drops cpu temps by 3c when gaming.

First of all get a cooling pad !

i had the same issues with my laptop and i underclock it . Here is how to do it :
CPU
go to power plans , current one ->Chamge plan settings->Processor power managament->Maximum processor state . Set at 70% both .

GPU
i ve used EVGA precision X , Decreased GPU core clock by30% Here from 900MHz to 600MHz

i ve had the laptop for nearly 9 years , it s fine this way .

Make sure you are using the balanced power plan and not high performance. I had to undervolt my laptop with the i5 8300h so it would stop heating up like that. I used intel xtu, a 2019 version is the only one that supports undervolting on your cpu. Newer versions dropped support and is probably why you were unable to do it. Get an older version and you will be able to reduce the core and cache offset. Start with something like -0.110v and keep testing and lowering from there. I'm currently at -0.140v, any lower and my laptop shuts off when I put a usb device in. I had it down to -0.175v and everything still worked except usb so I settled on -0.140. Max temp barely reaches 91-92c, far from throttling.
These cpus throttle at 100c and shut down at 101c. Mine never would shutdown, but it would always reach the 99-100c throttle point. Thanks to undervolting it doesn't do that.
Cheers

The problem is that i already tried finding older versions of that program but i couldnt find it anywhere. Could you maybe link the site where i can download it? Also i use the ultimate performance power plan because when i use balanced most games run at like 30-40 fps while ultimate always gives 60+ (if the laptop is capable of running the game). Someone told me that ultimate perfomance power plan doesnt come with windows and ive had the laptop for 2 years so i dont remember what i did to get that power plan.

Also i forgot to mention. When the laptop does reach 97 degrees it just starts stuttering and the sound is crackling to the point that you cant make out what the sounds are. The whole laptop just freezes for a quarter of a second every 3 secons (something like that) and i cant find a solution.

This is a way to do it, but it will severely impact you. You will basically lose the turbo boost clock along with a percentage of the base clock. That is a big performance hit.

This is why it is best to first see if you can either undervolt or lower the boost clock value (or both), unless you are playing games where you can afford such low performance.

Along with what Harware Hero is suggesting, you could also try out Throttlestop, which is unlikely to have compatibility issues. It also allows you to drop your boost clock value which is something else you could try to reduce the heat output.

However, about the claim that the cpu does not throttle until it reaches 100 c, this is partly untrue. Most, if not all laptop manufacturers set the throttling temperature to a lower value than what the cpu manufacturer suggests. It is called prochot temperature, and if you use the software I mentioned above you can actually see what it is set as and if you have triggered it or not.

So i will lose fps if i underclock the cpu?
Psychlapse 2021 年 6 月 27 日 上午 9:14
On my MSI I use a laptop cooling fan - It does make a difference, and I go into my MSI control panel, add each game I play, and set the user settings to high performance instead of extreme. I don't actually notice any performance differences, but my fan doesn't come on nearly as often and the whole thing seems to run cooler.

It depends. If you are running with uncapped fps and the game is not bottlenecked by the gpu then yes, you will definitely lose fps.

If you are running with capped fps you might not see a drop - that is especially true with older games, as I mentioned above.

In any case it is something you would have to test with each game you have. Once again I suggest you try undervolting first but it is up to you - if limiting max processor state works well enough for your tastes, it is an option too.

I also have an i5-8300H w/ 1050ti, I just use the balanced power setting and set max frame rate with RTSS in Rivatuner to 60fps, helps keep the gpu temps in check - setting RTSS example below:

also using a Thermaltake V20 lap cooler for $17, sadly overpriced these days - this is a decent one Cooler Master NotePal X-Slim Cooling Pad w/ 160mm Fan[www.amazon.com] for $20

Wait so in the beggining of that video i just put 60 where he put 30 and run balanced mode? I cant hear the guy in the video so im a little confused.

Yes exactly, that is what I have it set to on mine
