Gamepad Desktop Configuration on Steam
Since I need 5billion different launchers nowadays and I have a Switch Pro Pad, I started to play around with the Controller Desktop Configuration in Steam so that I can use my pad on games with other launchers. Nothing I do there seems to work well.

First off I changed to another profile there, namly a Standard Controller profile. Now every game I launch outside of Steam seems to interpret the button presses differently. For example, B is on Y and so on.

Also I can't manage to change the automatically loaded Xbox button profile (AB, XY) to the Switch button profile (BA, YX).

So where do you guys think the bug lies? Or am I simply too stupid?

A gamepad style configuration isn't going to work as your desktop configuration. The inputs won't be recognized, you'll have to use keyboard and mouse configuration on the controller.

If you want gamepad controls you'll need to add each launcher as a non-Steam game. You can then configure the launcher for gamepad. Open the launcher from Steam and it will load the configuration.

For the buttons, open big picture mode and go to controller settings. There you can check "use nintendo button layout".

Thanks dude! So adding the launcher alone will suffice, I don't have to add each game by itself?

Yeah it will suffice unless you want to set up a custom configuration for that game. If you want to play a game from Epic Games Store, simply open the launcher from Steam and then select the game in EGS.

Depending on the game, you can also set up individual game configurations. For those games, add them as non-Steam games and launch them from Steam. Some games will work like this, but not all.

One more tip. If you go to your Steam library you can right click on the launcher and add a desktop shortcut.

After that you can simply click on the desktop shortcut and the config will load instead of having to navigate to it in your Steam library.
