Brand new HDD having I/O issues
Hello,

I recently bought a WD Black 4TB HDD.[www.newegg.com] I physically installed it like normal but when I start in BIOS it's not showing in any SATA port. I also cannot seem to format it as when I try to, it gives me the error message, "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error". I've tried switching SATA ports, switched the power/SATA cables, & updated drivers but nothing seems to work. I've yet to run a check disk in command prompt but not sure how to do it since it's not formatted. Any ideas would be highly appreciated.

Thank you

That's confusing. If it's not even showing up in the BIOS, then how are trying to format it in Windows?

But if the BIOS isn't even picking it up then it sounds like it is either not connected to an port that is active (some ports may be disabled when certain other things are activate on some boards) or the drive itself indeed sounds faulty.

Do you hear the drive spinning up or hear or feel the vibration of it operating when on?

many mobos disable some sata ports when using m.2 drives
check the mobo manual to see what ports are always enabled and use those

also try another sata data cable, they can go bad, also check the sata power connector

Whenever I open up Disk Management it gives me the option to initialize it as GPT or MBR. So far I’ve only done GPT but gives me the error message. I do have a WD Black NVMe SSD, could that be interfering with using up SATA ports? I’ve tried all of them but none of them show the HDD, nor does it mention what SATA(s) the SSD is using.

I’m also 50/50 on whether the drive boots up and runs idle... It makes a singular beep on startup. I feel more vibration now, if that makes sense (because I now have two HDDs with this new one). It also makes around 2-3 beeps on shutdown.

I just hope it’s not faulty or DOA.

I’ve checked and that is true, I looked up the mobos manual, saying ”The SATA2 will be unavailable when installing M.2 SATA device into M.2 slot. Does this mean I have to remove the SSD completely?

EDIT: Following up to this, I found a diagram of my mobos way of disabling SATA. I have an MSI Z390 Gaming Plus. My SSD is currently at an M.2_1 since it's the only slot. Technically speaking it only disables SATA2, right? The cable connecting to the new HDD is connected to SATA5 and I've already tried the others to no avail. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong?

When using M2 slot(s) only some SATA ports are disabled. Please try the WD HDD connected to port 0 or 1 as listed in the Motherboard manual. It will usually be ports 2-5 (depending on total sata ports and which nvme slot you use of you have multiples as to which sata ports will be disabled. But from my experiences sata ports 0 and 1 should always be available.

If you still experiencing the same issues after trying all of this, please try the new hdd on another machine and see if it's seen and can get formatted properly without issues, if not then it's possible that the hdd is DOA.

Also if your BIOS/UEFI offers options for the sata ports such as PATA/IDE vs AHCI modes, please ensure that the sata ports are set to AHCI mode.

double check power and see if it shows in bios

if its a new drive, it will not show in explorer til you partition and format the drive in disk management

Look up wd’s disk diagnostic tool. Your drive may simply be defective.

I had a wd red that kinda worked but caused my entire desk to vibrate… It failed to complete the diagnostics and that was a valid reason to rma.

^This also.

Once that app is installed, launch it and see of it see the drive. Then do the SMART test, followed by the Simple test, followed by the Extended test. If fails anything, make note of any error messages and return the drive for either refund or replacement.

If it is defective just buy a WD Gold data center drive they are faster and quieter than WD Blacks.

Sounds like wd to me. That's why i get Seagate.

Yea I would not even bother with WD Black HDD anymore. WD Red Pro, Gold and also Seagate IronWolf/IronWolf Pro are so much better, faster, quieter.

Reason for them being both quieter and faster. Well they are faster because they often have bigger cache than WD Blacks. Reds will be significantly slower they are much lower RPM but have fatter caches, you are better off sticking with 7200RPM drives. WD Gold drives are designed to have sustained punishment, they will last a very long time.

I've personally owned both internal and external Seagate drives, I really despise them datacenter and backup company known as backblaze found Seagate drives failed far more often than say WD drives, HGST(Was officially purchased by WD so it is now a WD sub-brand) or other brands. Seagate was notorious for failure. (Also stay away from Toshiba)

Red Pro was designed for NAS
Gold for Data Center
IronWolf is basically on the WD Black performance level, but again just quieter by deaign. IronWolf Pro is also good enough for NAS or Data Center

Thank you all, these are all nice alternatives if the HDD doesn't work out. I personally just need enough storage for large chunks of video editing and maybe some games. I'm going to plan on trying these last few remedies in a few hours before thinking about the other WD series or Seagate. My other older HDD is actually a Seagate and stayed well for a good while. I'll probably post a follow-up but as of now I've been running the quick test diagnostic but the progress doesn't seem to be moving at all.

Edit: Would a replacement even be worth it at this point? It’s funny since the disk arrived today.

if its new, file a return/exchange from where you got it

if it over 1mo and shows bad on wd software, then rma the drive
you will only need to pay return shipping, only a few $
you can use paypal shipping, its cheaper than usps or ups directly
https://www.paypal.com/shiplabel/create/
they also have a cross ship option, where they send a replacement drive right away, and bill if you dont send one back
