Power supply salvage
Pretty simple question.

What software, or general testing do you guys do to see if an older PSU is still viable?

I have to build a new computer, as my current one has begun to fail. The PSU itself is 11 years old, but I'd like to salvage that out of it to save a little money. As far as I can tell it is shown no signs of any issues.

I have the Raidmax RX-1000AE: 1000 Watt 80+ Gold.

couldn't find a link to it, it may be discontinued. But I did find a very similar model.

You'd have to fully stress test the cpu ND gpu at same time to see if the psu is still good enough to handle such tdp for sustained periods.

Prime95 > small ffts loop test for cpu

Furmark for gpu

And Cpuid HWMonitor for temp *C monitoring

stress test and pray it does not kill any components if it fails
Also, if the psu has a manual toggle switch on the back for 110v vs 220v

Toss it. Those are junk and shouldn't be trusted. Any modern pc for over the laaast decade should be using a psu with active pfc auto switching.
I dont think it`s wise to use so old PSU in new build and possibly compromise your new hardware. If it was 5-7 years sure but 11 is kinda too much and Raidmax is not that great to begin with.
Yeah, I wouldn’t trust that PSU. Sell it and get a good quality 550-650W unit.

According to that list you gave me yesterday, that is pretty much on the Pompeii waiting to happen Tier.

Yep
Fair enough. I think I have my answer. That was my concern too was that even though it may still function in my current rig, it being so old it may be risky.

Thanks for the advice guys, I really appreciate it.

I'll post up my finished build on PC part picker when I get to that stage. Thanks again guys.

If you aren't sure what to get:

Anything from Tier B and up.
11 year old PSU..................................bin bin bin, oh and bin
avoid raid max PSU's that are older like the plague
they are not worth the risk ..got a pile of 3 of em here .. i use em for scrap wire only .
got em from customers failed power supplies ..and one 550 watt one i bought .. it lasted 12 months ..then failed to run even a GTX 960 card properly .

buy a quality seasonic PSU ..and yes they do make decent affordable ones

now if you had some thing like a old ANTEC PSU .. they do hold up .. still have the original one i bought back in 2000 in my 3fx voodoo 5 system with a P3 933 and old Abit motherboard
but heck that PSU is so old it does not even have all the connectors you need for a modern system . and i would never try to use it in another system .

Some head scratchers on that list.

Tier D+ - Potentially dangerous, but only in rather unrealistic situations
Evga G3
Seasonic Focus Plus Gold

I've owned both of these for years and still recommend them. At one point I had a rig with 6 gpus running off the G3. I don't know how much more unrealistic you'd get than that.

I also own a G2 which is rated A tier. I see no appreciable drop in quality between the power supplies.

The Supernova G3 has issues with OTP and OPP.
