Motherboard won't recognise M.2
Hi Guys,

Any help much appreciated. I built a budget system for my workplace, as I was able to pick up a bundle of mobo, 16gb ram, cpu and cooler all for £50/€58 locally.

I bought the cheapest m.2 ssd I could find purely as a OS boot drive, after making sure it was compatible with my system using PC Part Picker.

SSD:
Western Digital Green 240 GB Internal SSD M.2 SATA
Mobo:
Asus 970 Pro Gaming/Aura
CPU:
AMD FX 6100

Problem:
Mobo does not recognise SSD in the bios, and neither does Windows when selecting a drive to install the OS on (it is the only drive plugged in)

Troubleshooting:
I performed a bios update to the latest release and used UEFI motherboard function to update, still not recognised.

Thought I would ask here, before I simply go and buy a standard SSD drive, as I'm not sure what my problem is since there are no compatibility issues using PC Part Picker.

I'm not a pro builder as I'm sure you can tell, hence why I'm here asking for help!

Thanks in advance.

Probably needs to be initialised before it can be used. Once initialised you can format it and use it.

EDIT: I should have checked mobo specs first. As others have pointed out yours only supports NVME m.2 drives.

The M.2 slot on your motherboard only appears to support NVMe. Your drive is SATA.

If you want a SATA drive just get a normal 2.5"/3.5" disk, SATA isn't worth using a M.2 slot for since it provides no benefits over a normal drive.

Be aware that the FX 6100 is 9 years old and it will struggle to run pretty much anything.

From motherboard specs:
1 x M.2 Socket 3, , with M Key, type 2242/2260/2280 storage devices support (PCIE 2.0 x4)
Your SSD is SATA, motherboard only supports NVME/pci-e. It will not work.

Also, WD Green drives aren’t very good, I would maybe buy a different one.

Thanks Omega, that's a big help. I wondered if this may have been the issue, but as a novice builder I've always put a lot of faith in PC Part Picker and this seemed like a very straightforward issue that you would expect it to detect in regards to compatibility. Regarding the cpu, I'm aware it's pretty old, but this can be marginally upgraded to a better FX if I deem it necessary. I did look at many benchmarks using current programs and games and it seems it should do just fine for a basic workstation for my needs. I also agree with you that a 2.5" is no worse than this, I just got it for ease of use, one less thing to plug in - turned out the opposite!

Thanks, yes you are right. It was merely for a boot drive for a basic work computer.

Thanks Suicidal, you've helped me out a lot in the Steam forums - I don't forget a name like yours!

I have responded to this point to Omega

Look at Samsung 970 EVO or SK Hynix NVME SSD.

Dumb idea. Just buy an actual nvme drive. WD green are junk. It's just like a Kingston v400

Thanks guys. I will refund it and just get a small 2.5” to use as a boot drive instead. Thanks for your help

A 250gb nvme drive is all you need for housing core os and apps.
Games can go on 1tb sat ssd or a performance hdd.

Look at adata and intel
