older gen i7 processor on modern motherboards
i am looking to upgrade my computer with a new motherboard, new ram and a new PSU. the grapics card i'm looking to get is a Asus PRIME Z270-P or a Asus PRIME Z390-P but i was looking at the specs and it says it'll only support intel 8th and 9th gen PCU's? My current CPU and the one that i want to use is a intel i7 4790, will this CPU work in these motherboards? never did a motherboard swap so i'm kinda new to this.

do not even buy that ..those old AMD GPU's are not worth the problems you have to deal with with the drivers .. plus with a used GPU you have no idea how badly it was over clocked

look at a new GTX 1600 super or better
if you play in 1080 P for 1440 P look ay the GTX 1070 2060 or 1660ti cards

if ya wanna go AMD wait for the rx 5600 line for a budget card ..they should be out soon

Well if i have to buy a new CPU i'll probably go ryzen, don't know if that affects the GPU choice?
go ryzen go with what ya can afford .. gpu does not matter ..i only suggested what is a few decent cards that are currently available now
for gaming ryzen is as good as locked i5/i7 (non k)
if you want to oc, ryzen wont gain much, but intel k can get 10-20% more
if the extra $100 to go from ryzen to intel k can put off the next upgrade for another year or two it can be well worth it

his 4790 should be fine with a decent PSU and a vid card upgrade ..as long as he has at least 16 gig or ram ..for now

i mean look at the passmark score and i have a 7600 K @ 4,. ghz

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-Core-i7-4790-vs-Intel-Core-i5-7600K/2226vs2919

he should be fine for games as i have no problems with games in 1080 P with a GTX 1060 card (just some games yea lower the settings a bit .. ) but i will admit yes i need a better GPU

tax time is coming ..and i'm waiting on what Nvidia and AMD have to offer in the summer of 2020 ..as for now // i'm happy with what i get for FPS in games

GPU and new PSU will be my next upgrade

yes my case is kinda too small, i think i'll get a new PSU (maybe the one that i was planning to get in the first place) 16gb of ram, new GPU (EVGA or something small) and a new case i think i'm going to leave the CPU and motherboard as is for now...
4790 non k may be near its limits for newer games
k oc'd has another year or two left before newer games will not run as well

if he doesnt mind lowered settings or <60 fps at times and can hold off for upgrading, then just get the gpu, ram, case and psu

yeah i'm used to lower settings and lower fps, i think i'll gradually upgrade my rig
You and I both

...if it's any consolation I'm still running a i5-3570 though I have the same GPU as _I_, a 1060.

get a PSU and a better gpu .. or hold off a bit .. till the next gen GPu's ship they should have benchmarks in a few weeks on the new AMD one .. and the new Nvidia ones ..who knows ..but for now go a new PSU and better GPU .. that you can alwats reuse in your future build ..go for the best bang the buck on a vid card ..and do not scrimp on a power supply .. go seasonic .. and get a good one .. at least a 600 650 watt model ..not the $ 40 ones LOL

more info on the next AMD GTX 1060 competing card

no price listed yet tho .. but i'll bet Nvida will strike back with an 8 gig card at the same or lower price

So should it be worth investing in more ram until I can upgrade the cpu? Seems like 60 bucks wasted
if you have less then 16 gig .. yes see your mainboard manual to see if it even supports 16 gig of ram before you buy any upgrade

and buy your ram from the crucial site

looks like you only have 2 slots

wait .. it does support 16 gig with this kit

Is it possible to use the Kingston hyper x ram on this board or isn't that possible?
dunno i only buy crucial ram .. as its always guaranteed to work

it only shipped with 8g
most likely it can use 2x8g
i doubt its a 32g max

https://www.cnet.com/products/acer-aspire-tc-705-w-tower-core-i5-4460-3-2-ghz-8-gb-1-tb-dtsxnaa013/
similar shipped with 1x8g dimm
get a matching 8g dimm for its other slot if it has 1x 8g dimm

also post a cpuz validation link
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
cpuz -> validate button -> submit button
it will open a browser, copy the url (address) and paste it here
