older gen i7 processor on modern motherboards
i am looking to upgrade my computer with a new motherboard, new ram and a new PSU. the grapics card i'm looking to get is a Asus PRIME Z270-P or a Asus PRIME Z390-P but i was looking at the specs and it says it'll only support intel 8th and 9th gen PCU's? My current CPU and the one that i want to use is a intel i7 4790, will this CPU work in these motherboards? never did a motherboard swap so i'm kinda new to this.

Full current specs and what is your upgrade budget?

They are different socket types, the cpu being 1150 and those boards are 1151, so no it will not work.

Neither of those boards is the right socket, they are both LGA 1151, your cpu is 1150

edit: ninja'd so hard

No, it will not work. The mobos for your CPU were made about the same time and chances are good that yours is as good as it gets.

On the bright side you probably not need a CPU upgrade for another year or two.

current motherboard is an old acer t705 with 8 GB ddr3, GPU is a GTX 1050 TI LP, cpu is a intel i7 4790, 220W PSU. I have found a new setup containing motherboard: Asus PRIME Z390-P or the z270-p, G-skill DDR-4 Aegis, WD Blue 500gb SSD(m.2), PSU: gigabyte GP-B700H GPU: gonna re use the gtx 1050TI and case

No GO

Also 1050 ti is abysmal and not worth keeping if you are upgrading your MB/CPU

What's the budget for the upgrade?

not looking to spend a lot of money so what do you guys suggest? kinda tight on budget (restauring a car)

for the upgrade (didn't expect i needed a new CPU) i was looking at the 350€ max

that board will only work with 8-9th gen i3/i5/i7 and g4xxx-g5xxx cpus

either get ryzen cpu/mobo or intel k cpu and z board

would you consider selling your current components to stretch that budget?

you will need to upgrade the GPU for sure.

here is the issue

intel changed the pinout between the 6 th and 7th gen CPU's and the new ones .. for the new CPU;s past an i 5 7600 K or i 7 7700 K you have a totally different pin out in the 1151 socket itself .. this you have to buy a new motherboard to support the 8th gen and 9th gen CPU's

your CPU is an old 4th gen one that used a different socket altogether

a Z 270 main board will only support up to the i 7 7700 K

and will not support your current CPU at all as it is a socket 1150 CPU

the Z 270 series boards use socket 1151 .. version 1

and also use DDR 4 ram ..not DDR 3

so your looking at ...... for an upgrade

NEW CPU + ram + motherboard

what do you suggest for a minimum budget?
don't think the components will fetch anything the motherboard is outdated like hell, etc
