she never touched it in bios
Take off the LCD panel frame and cut the wires to the webcam to make sure.

Putting tape or stickers over it doesn't cut it anymore.

OP is trying to get the camera working. not looking for a way to disable it for good...

in device manager it's grayed out? is that possible? I thought it was either in there or not in there or in there with an x or something.

Edit: maybe it is. check your privacy settings in Windows isn't blocking the webcam from being accessed.

That aside OP was not asking for how to disable it so you comment was the exact opposite to what was asked.

The fact you say it's greyed out in Device manager means it's not installed and still needs the correct drivers installed for it to work.

If it was installed it wouldn't be greyed out and be the same coloured icon as everything else. If it was installed but had problems it'd look colour like the others but have a small fault image attached to it.

She needs to get the CORRECT drivers from the manufacturer.

That's what they want you to think.

Who is they?
What would it matter if I don't have a camera in the first place?

<---- Also have camera cover over the front facing camera on both my phone and tablet. Rear camera isn't but then it'd only see the floor or whatever surface it is placed on.
Code 45 means the device is not connected to the system. This is generally not a driver issue. I can think of two main reasons why a built-in laptop webcam might show as not connected:

1) The webcam died. This is entirely possible, I've seen numerous dead/defective laptop webcams in my time. If this is the case, the easiest, fastest, and cheapest fix is to buy an external USB webcam.

2) The webcam might be disabled by a physical switch/button or preloaded software from the laptop manufacturer. Some laptops have a physical slide switch (I've mainly seen this on HP) on the side or might have a function button to toggle the webcam. The function button would typically be on one of the F keys at the top of the keyboard. This button will generally have a picture of a camera with a slash through it.

Preloaded software on the laptop might also have a way to toggle the webcam on/off. For example, on Lenovos the software would be Lenovo Vantage, which has a toggle button in there for the webcam as well as the microphone. Check the manufacturer preloaded software for such a toggle and see if the webcam is turned off.
Do a factory restore of the laptop and see if it works after that. I've had to do that a few times with Dell/Aloenware laptops.

Yup, this was the reason for me, thanks.
This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
