Laptop to tv via hdmi
Hello folks,

As title, I'm trying to connect my laptop to my TV to play some of my games on there for 4k + couch goodness. The issue I'm having is that the framerate chugs and I'm not sure what's causing it.

Laptop:
Cpu is one of those 10775k things. Not exactly that but nearly there.
Ram 16gb
3060rtx 6gb gfx
1tb ssd
Windows 10

Tv is a Samsung q60t I think. 4k smart.

Things I've fixed so far:

No signal from source - connected hdmi directly from laptop to tv. Before I used a splitter which worked fine for consoles, but laptop wouldn't have it. Fixed now.

Tv is in game mode

Settings - display - hardware accelerated scheduling on
Nvidia control panel - display set at 60hz.

This is the few settings I've found so far which have all helped, but the framerate is still inconsistent and chugs along at 20-25 fps.

I'm sure it's not to do with graphics settings. I've tried multiple games on but 4k ultra and 4k super low basic graphics with everything off and it still chugs.

I can't help but feel like it's some sort of syncing issue somewhere. Maybe the laptop and tv are somehow fighting over what frame to display next?

It's not life or death, my laptop flies on its own screen. Cyberpunk 2077 played flawlessly on ultra settings full rtx on, but like I say put the same game on my tv and I struggle to get past say 20fps on all minimum settings.

I've even tried limiting games to 30fps but it can't seem to even hit that cap.

Anyone else had this issue?

Try disabling Quantum HDR (on your TV).

Well weirdly I seem to have done something it likes. I've gone into both nvidia control panel and standard windows display settings and out them both on 30hz/fps. Now it seems to be running at a smooth 30fps at least. It's not 60 but at least it's in 4k.

You're running 4K on a rtx 3060? What resolution is the laptop screen?

30fps on Cyberpunk at 4K is the best you'll get on that card. All I can think of is the resolution the game outputs changes when you play on the screen/TV.

Just run at 1080p/60
It'll still look good on that 4K TV without having nearly unplayable fps

This is the answer. A mobile 3060 cannot do 4k period.
Not period if he's getting 30fps steady.

If laptop and tv is HDMI 2.1 easy 4K. HDMI 2.0 can do up to 60HZ at 4K. HDMI 1.3-1.4, to 30HZ.

yes, but the laptops gpu will have more trouble playing 4k, and plus 1080p scales nicely on 4k displays, evenly double pixeled

the mobile 3060 is nowhere near the desktop gpu in performance
they are limited by the laptops power delivery and cooling

Batman arkham Knight is playing well and smooth at 4k30 on high settings.

Take out your battery if you can if you're tethering to the TV for extended periods.

Sure it can. RTX in Laptops are the same performance as the Desktop version. 1080 Ti, 2080 Super and 3060 can all do 4K/30 just fine. Doing 4K/60 can be done; just won't get a solid 60 fps in ALL games at the highest visual settings. However you can gain fps a few ways at 4K; first off you can apply DLSS if the game supports it. You can also disable things like FXAA, TXAA, MSAA, SMAA, or or any anti-aliasing feature for the most part because if you actually are playing at 4K on a 4K Display, it should display crisp and clear enough to not need anti-aliasing applied. What may also help is enable GSync. As many Displays, even many 4K TV support FreeSync, which translates to GSYNC via modern gpus that are GTX 10 series or newer using latest gpu drivers. This sort of thing with being able to enable GSync on a FreeSync display has been a feature of the drivers since 2018

Applying 60 or 120 hz on a 4K TV however your gpu has to meet those requires along with the HDMI cable that you use. Also on most TV it will also be based on which HDMI port you use, as usually only one port on the TV would support the Max specs of such as 60 or 120 hz

If the laptop own screen handles above 1080p and the games run very smooth fps, but not on the hdmi output, chances are that hdmi output is only driven by the Intel gpu, and not outputting via the Nvidia one.

Why does that matter? Genuine question, I've never heard of needing to do that.

Your laptop doesn't have a 4K screen does it?

No.
Hence the connecting to tv bit.

What's the native screen resolution for the laptop screen?

Laptop screen is 1080p. I know it will do 60hz but not sure if it goes higher than that.
